I use saline solution and then Flonase.  What sprays do you use?  For those
who Flonase, how much do you use per nostril and how often?  Mucho thankio

I scrupulously avoid steroid sprays and anything with benzalkonium
chloride in it.  I'm using homemade saline.

I use the pure saline, from any one of the premixed solutions without
benzalkonium.  Risk of contaminating your homemade is real.  I would
like something to help me suck out the rest, because when I am full,
it hurts to blow.  I do hear about a device being made that can both
spray and evacuate, or do either.  This sounds appealing.  I am not
sure which I like better, a full mist or a stream of water.  Both feel
good.  Any thoughts??

could you clarify your comment re: risk of contaminating homemade
saline solutions?

thanks,

You stopped using Astelin? Are you better without it?

I know I'm not at all worse without it.

I may be better; just had a weeklong cold during which all I needed to
flush out the colorful evidence of infection was my NeilMed bottle.
Also, am able to skip days of irrigating without a problem for the first
time in years.

I just didn't want to do any more damage or take it if it's not necessary.

Earlier you wrote that it (Astelin) helped you a lot.

It did!  From the very first time I sprayed with it, I had relief of
allergic sx within minutes, the congestion was gone, I could breathe and
even abort a sinus migraine if I sprayed soon enough.  I wasn't
desensitized to my allergies at the time, nor was I aware of the dangers
of BK preservative.

In  the years since, I've had extraordinarily good desensitization
results, gotten good control with irrigation and learned about BK, so I
decided to stop using it.

I'm not throwing it out, just not using it routintely.  Unlike other
nasal sprays for allergies, it works within minutes of use, not weeks.

When I was on Flonase it was two sprays total per day per side.  I must
admit that I sneaked an extra spray in on the worst side.

Now I'm on Flunisolide which I like better because it's .025% solution which
is maximum 4 sprays per day per side and it doesn't smell or taste as bad.
It also is a finer mist which , in my opinion , gets to more places but I
need to be careful not to inhale while spraying or it sprays down my throat
a little.
It has .01% Benzalkonium Chloride , unfortunately, but it's probably to
lessen the contamination issue of re-infection.

The Flunisolide works well for me.  I breathe clear all the time now.

I stopped using all other treatment.

i have tried almost every steroid spray that has been on the market,
including those without the bk.  all of them cause a strange sensation
in my nasal membranes - like an uncomfortable thickening.  i feel way
better off of them, though i know many people get relief through their
use.

the ent wants me to try mixing pulmicort capsules with saline & doing
a rinse that way, but i can't really see where that is going to be
much different.  i'm not too inclined to try it.  (& it's pretty
expensive without drug insurance).
