Sinus Surgery Recovery

Hello everyone.

So I had sinus surgery almost 3 weeks ago and have a few questions
about recovery. I had turbinate reduction and endoscopy something...no
septum stuff...so it seemed pretty basic.
I was completely miserable for about a week and a half...not really in
pain, just felt like the WORST head cold I had ever had. My throat and
ears were pretty sore after all that thick nasty drainage. Then I went
for a follow-up where they basically vaccuumed it all out and took out
the rubber straw thingies (I know, not very technical). After that I
started feeling a ton better and last week, I almost felt completely
back to normal except for a little stuffines.

Then this weekend everything turned for the worse again! For 3 days
now I have felt miserable again with bloody gross thick drainage down
the back of my throat and full ears. I feel like I did the first week
again. What happened? How could I go from feeling great to feeling
this bad so quickly? I have another follow-up appt later this week, so
I'll talk to the dr. but I'm wondering if anyone else had this
experience?

Thanks!

Sounds like you may have developed a post-operative infection.
(Happened to me after my surgery too.)  The surgery involves scraping
your sinus linings, which damages the cilia.  Those are your natural
defense against germs and bacteria--they sweep contamination out.  With
the cilia damaged, you are more susceptible to infections till
everything heals up.

Your surgeon should have advised you to be a fanatic about keeping germs
away from your nose till your sinuses are completely healed:  Don't rub
your nose or eyes, wash your hands frequently, stay away from people
with colds, etc.

If the onset of these new symptoms came on suddenly over the weekend,
then it sounds like a viral post-operative infection--essentially you
caught a cold in your sinuses.  It will get better.

Good luck.

Thanks Steve.
I do wonder if maybe I caught a cold or something. Not sure. I had a
follow up appt. today and the doctor cleaned everything out again and
said it all looks really good but is still healing. He said it was
normal to have some good days and then some bad ones...he said it
didn't look like I had an infection or anything and said to give it 2
more weeks before I feel back to normal. So I guess, it's good to hear
that my symptoms are normal and that nothing's  wrong, but I didn't
realize the recovery would be this long!
Thanks for the info though!
