a friend sent me some patient info horror stories about zithromax side
effects, some of which alluded to legal class action suits.   does
anyone know if side effects are more common on this than on some of
the other macrolides or antibiotics in different classes?  is this a
recently developed drug?  are antibiotics in the same class generally
tolerated the same way?  i realize that every drug carries a risk/
benefit profile, including very severe effects.   just trying to sort
out information & keeping my fingers crossed as usual.  i already have
the gift of ear ringing from a previous drug reaction, but i'd sure
like to feel free of sinusitis.

Probably less common.

Zithromax is actually *less* likely to cause a cytochrome P450 drug
interaction with other drugs, than the other antibiotics in the
macrolide class, because of its unique chemical structure.  If you have
to take another drug that can interact with macrolides, you may be able
to tolerate its interaction with zithromax.

As antibiotics go, Zithromax is pretty well-tolerated.

Ellen,
In my experience it's very well tolerated. It does have a long half
life, so allergic reactions--which seem to be rare (I've never seen
one, and it's used so often) can linger.
I have used it specificialy when other macrolides can't be used due
to drug interactions: macrolides can prolong the Q-T interval of the
heart, as can various high blood pressure medications and anti-
depressants, and zithromax is the only macrolide that can be used with
many of those drugs.
Susan had once posted a web site where people posted their horror
stories on zithromax. In my experience, it's very commonly used and
exceptionally well tolerated.

Ellen, zithromax recently went generic, so it's been around for at
least a decade.
