Hi folks,

Anybody ever seen the movie "Safe"?  It's a 1995 movie, starring
Julieanne Moore as a wealthy suburban housewife whose life gradually
spirals downward, and blames it on man-made chemicals in the
environment.  She has allergic or asthmatic reactions, and a malaise
to go along with it.  She feels sick and depressed, but the doctors
can't find anything wrong with her.  I won't say anything else about
the plot, so as not to spoil it.

"Safe" is not a fast-paced movie, it takes its time to tell, but it's
one of those that creeps up on you.  I watched it last night and had a
dream similar to the character afterward, so maybe you might call it
"haunting" in a way.  Julieanne Moore does a great job with this role.
Then again, she's one of our finest actresses, so to watch her is a
pleasure.

In any case, I recommend renting it.  My local Blockbuster doesn't
carry it, but I finally got a copy from Blockbuster online.  It's a
bit expensive to buy.

I saw it many years ago, it was a horror flick, from my perspective!

Susan,

I agree, it is a horror movie.  Reminds me somewhat, albeit far less
intensely, of "Requiem for a Dream", a movie (and book) where
addiction is really the leading character, although not in any fantasy
role.  No need for monster and slasher movies when there's far more
horror in watching what ordinary people do to themselves, or what is
done to them by other ordinary people with an agenda of their own
(i.e. doctors, alternative healers, etc.)  Does she make herself sick
or is it being done to her?  Or is it both? As you know, I had to go
through hell and almost one unnecessary surgery before I found that
immunotherapy works for me, yet I still wonder how long that will
last.  It's a bit like looking over my shoulder, even though I
appreciate the string of healthy days and weeks I didn't have for a
couple of years.

Still, when I have a dry cough that seems not to come from my previous
symptoms, I wonder if it's stress-induced or from my allergies.  Or
both?

Yes, "Safe" is a horror movie, indeed.

Rick
