I have been battling a sinus infection or some kind of sinusitis (not
really sure what's going on) for about the last 3 months. Right now I
am on Levaquin, Nasonex and just did 3 days of Prednisone. I also have
done 10 days of Biaxin and 10 days of Amoxicillan with no luck. I have
been irrigating with salt water (the only thing that seems to bring
relief) but now for the last 4 or 5 days I keep smelling this
disgusting smell. I thought it was my dog (who probably needs a bath)
but now the same gross smell that I smell when I pet him I am smelling
on everybody. I almost gag when I hug my kids and today I gagged when
I was working out with my trainer because I smelled this smell on her
too. I smells kind of like rotten garbage and it's over-powering, kind
of like a dead animal. Ugh. I haven't told my ENT about this and I
feel like he's kind of fed up with me because nothing is working.
Although he hasn't ordered a CAT scan yet which I think is weird
because I had sinus surgery 8 years ago with the same dr. so I am
prone to sinus problems. I know I need to find a new Dr. but does
anyone have any idea what this smell sensation might be. My husband
(who also smells bad to me) says the dog and the kids smell fine so I
think there is either a slight odor that my nose is magnifying or the
odor is just in my sinuses? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
I am just kind of at my rope's end.

When I get a bad bacterial sinus infection, it often smells like rotten
meat--the same odor I remember as a child when we had a power outage and
the meat in our refrigerator went bad. Presumably that smell is due to
dying tissue in my sinus cavities.

I have had the same thing.
I think that staph and the bacteria that causes gangrene have
characteristic odors like that.

I am always smelling things that may or may not be there. Sometimes it
seems to me that i have actually smelled something earlier in the day and
that that smell has taken up residence in my nose. I worked as a
zookeeper for a number of years and one particular odor that would live
with me for a day or more was death--that is the smell of a dying and
decaying mouse. this was before any surgery and in fact, before I
realized that i had a problem. I remeber bringing it up at lunch with my
peers in a "dont you hate it when..." type conversation where i found that
no one else shared my experience.
Also, i think that I am very sensitive to the odor of menstruation,
however faint, and i made the huge mistake of mentioning this once to my
wife.
It is strange because in many cases I have no smell, so i dont know if any
of the odors that i smell are real or not.
at times when i irrigate i sense the odor of raw turnips or eggplant.
