Identifying an ENT

Hi all,

I'm an American living in Beijing, and after years of sinus problems
I've finally had a CT scan showing a number of polyps.  I've decided
to go through with the surgery, but need to go back to the US to do
that.

Does anyone have any advice on how to identify a top ENT in a new
city?  I could do the surgery in either NY or DC, because I could stay
with relatives for an extended period of time and work out of my
company's offices there.

Also, any thoughts on how long one should plan to stay around for
follow-up care?

Thanks!
Felicia

Dr Jordan Josephson has a web site and a new book, on Amazon Allergy Relief
Now. That should help your decision.

The magazine "U.S. News & World Report" does an annual survey of the
best departments in the best American hospitals.  Under Ear/Nose/Throat,
they include

Johns Hopkins (Baltimore; top-rated)
Mount Sinai (NYC)
Sloan-Kettering (NYC)
Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center (NYC)
University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore)

IOW, if you're going to have surgery in the DC area, drive to Baltimore.
Don't go to the local DC hospitals.

From my own experience:  You'll need to try a couple of ENTs before you
find one you're comfortable with.  Beware, if the ENT acts like some
arrogant professor who treats you like an experimental lab rat.  Also
beware if the ENT seems to put 100% of his faith in CT scans.  That's a
common mistake.  CT scans can miss things and the best ENT will use a
complete, *detailed* patient history as a diagnostic tool, even in
today's high-tech medicine.

Depends on how extensive the surgery is and how well the surgery goes.
Removing polyps is real simple.  Is that all you're having?  Because a
septoplasty may require you to keep stents (splints) in your nose for
weeks.  Your American ENT may tell you you need more than just polyp
removal.

Personally, I wouldn't go flying across the Pacific Ocean for several
*months* after sinus surgery.  But just removing a few polyps is so
minor I might make an exception.
