Question about fatigue and current state sinusitis

About 2 months ago (Feb 6) I came down with a terrible sinus
infection.  I had a fever and chills (for one night only) and then had
nasty green and yellow stuff that was in my nasal passages for a few
weeks.  At night breathing through my nose was blocked.  I took a
short course of 5 days of Biaxin (antibiotic) and began nasal
irrigation.  Things did not improve until I saw and ENT who sent me
for a CT scan which showed a "low grade sinusitis" and he put me on 15
days of Avelox and gave me Rhinocourt spray for my nose.  Here is my
question:  Much to my delight, for the last 2 weeks I have been able
to breath through my nose at night and during the day, the yellow
mucus has been gone for at least 3 weeks - but the Fatigue is still
terrible.  I am an avid cyclist who is very in touch with my body and
I am basically exhausted even after the shortest exercise session.
Since I am able to breath freely through my nose now, how long can I
expect to feel tired like this?  Is this common to be past the stuffed
nose and infection and still be exhausted?  Any guidance will be
greatly appreciated.

Ps - I have learned a lot from all of everyone's posts here especially
about things I could have done better (don't blow nose too hard, don't
irrigate too aggressively)

Nikolas-

I'm just back from a hilly 20 miler on my Moots, but it was only my
second ride since Jan 26th, when I came down with a vicious sinus
infection.  Three antibiotics later (and a ton of other treatment
modalities), I'm feeling less congestion, but ... the energy level--
just as you say--is rotten.

Last year--during a pretty long stretch of good health--I was a
150-200 mile/week cyclist.  No more.  I'm going to try to build it up
again, but ... slowly ... patiently ... and giving my body the rest it
needs.

I tend to think that antibiotics wipe out the body (my opinion only),
and that the act of healing takes a great deal of our resources to
muster (again: just opinion).  I find myself truly exhausted (during
and) after each bout of sinusitis.

I'm also going for additional imaging to find out if it's anything
other than simple sinusitis.

Do you have allergies?? They can certainly trigger sinusitis AND cause
pretty mean fatigue.

I wish you the best, and a quick return to cycling!

Neil,

Wow, somebody who understands EXACTLY what I am going through.  Yeah,
I am on a team this year and everyone is training going to races and I
can barely recover from an easy training ride!  As far as the
allergies - I don't have any that I am aware of but I am certainly
going to talk with my ENT who I will see Monday.  He did give me the
Rhinocourt which seems to help the nasal allergies.  My hope was that
after the infections were cleared and my sinusese were clear that the
energy would come back but its taking weeks and its very up and down.
Last week I resolved to try and get 9 hours of sleep a night for 5
days and that didn't help much.  In the past if I had done that I
would be jumping out of my skin with energy.

I am going to try investigate some of the things people on this site
suggest to replace the "goof flora"  and see if that makes any
difference.  I'll post any updates as to what I learn that might be
useful.  BTW, cool bike Moots.

If you give a antibiotic to a perfectly healthy person, that can knock the
energy out of them. Also, any athlete being ill for a week takes time to get
back to former level. If you put an athlete to bed for a week as an
experiment it may take 6 weeks to get back in shape.
So whether its the medication or the illness hard to say. A blood test would
be useful to see where the hemoglobin and white count is.

I often tell my patients to use Vitamin B12 500 mg Sublingual twice a day
when they have this complaint. There is no real scientific evidence but my
patients say it works.

Hi Murray,

Thanks for you advice.  Some more info about me.  I have a Master's in
Exercise Physiology have worked with athletes on taking time off
etc... after taking many weeks off  (alomost 100% cold turkey no
training) when the infection was really bad - since it has been clear
(at least the mucus and clogging) I have still taken in very easy.

I had a full blood work up 4 days ago and my HGB is 14.2 and WBC is
5, Lymphocytes 42% it says nothing is out of range?  Do that look
correct?

I am going to  try the B12 its cheap, safe, and as long as you don't
mind flourescent colored urine,  well tolerated.  So thanks.  When you
mention sunlingual do I have to buy the kind that dissolves under your
tongue or can I just swallow a pill?

It must be sublingual under the tongue. The oral doesn't get absorbed.

Do we know the physiology of this?  Do certain antibioitic classes
exhibit this effect more than others? Is it always a temporary side
effect or is it a possibly permanent in some people with particular
antibiotics?

Just FYI...all the nosesprays I have tried for my allegies and chronic
sinusitis have made me extremely tired. I don't know if you've tried
going off the nose spray to see what happens?
