Blocked sinus/nasal passage

I have blocked sinuses from a cold right now.  It's only one nostril
at the moment, but the other will come and go.  This is a problem that
I have had since childhood and up until a few years ago I thought that
this was just a part of what everyone goes through when getting sick.

I have searched on this forum and the most common remedies for blocked
sinuses are irrigation or Affrin.  I don't see how these will clear a
blocked nasal passage, but somehow these seem to work for other
people.  Maybe I'm using the wrong words to describe my problem.

Basically, when one of my sinus passageways are blocked, there is
mucus starting about 1cm into my nose.  This is constant and I have no
airflow around it.  Sometimes I am able to blow air through that
nostril to interrupt the drainage from the nose for a while. At no
time can I actually breathe in from that nostril let-alone pour a
saline solution or spray into that nostril without it immediately
coming back out because it has no place to go.  Is there something
else I should be trying?

Sometimes the draining is so bad that I am generating about a teaspoon
of fluid from one nostril every minute.  I know my case isn't bad, so
what do some of you do to remain functional while such a state?

I'm grateful for any help you can provide.

Thanks,
David

What is your status now?
Can you breath though one or both nostrils?
Is it always the same nostril that is blocked or does it swap sides?

The drainage isn't so bad anymore, but the blockage is about the
same.  It does swap sides now each morning right after I get out of
bed.  This morning I was able to hit both nostrils with Affrin during
the swap.  Both nostrils got three sprays while they were mostly
open.  The "opening" nostril is certainly more open after the spray,
but the "closing" nostril is still completely closed.

When I had this type of cold/sinus problem years ago it would linger
for weeks or months.  I'm hoping I can kick this much sooner as it is
having a significant impact on my work.

Thanks,
David

David,
I think that if the blockage swapping sides that the blocking goo is
actually pretty far back.
I think the normal nose has a septum (barrier between the two sides)
that extends back to just in front of the ears. If the goo is slideing
between one side to the other, it has doing it in the space after the
upper septum ends. That means that you have a decent chance to reduce
the goo load by holding things like vitiman C, licorice and mouthwash
in your mouth, letting them diffuse into the goo and them sniffing it
out the back way.
You can not clear the front of your nose until you clear out the back
which means that you have to sniff, suck and spit it out.
The goo can absorb water to quadruple it's volume as you loosen it,
you will be amazed at the quanity that you will spit out, but if you
keep at it over the course of several weeks you will find that you can
consistantly keep both nostrils open.

Hope this helps you breath better.  We are there for you Bud!!!
