Would the following solution be alright to use if I substituted xylitol
for the Karo syrup?

Division of Allergy and Immunology at Scripps Clinics in La Jolla,
CA.  This solution can be made and stored in the refrigerator for up
to 2 weeks.

"ENT Solution"
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon white Karo syrup
1 pint warm water

Baking Soda-Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) acts as a
buffer.  Water tends to be slightly acidic.  This occasionally
bothers some people.  The addition of baking soda brings the pH of
the solution back into a physiological range.  I do not use baking
soda unless I have a sinus infection because it helps to absorb the
yucky odor.

Karo Syrup-Functions to make the solution more closely matched to our
physiological sugar concentration.

I've been doing that for years now, making a big batch of the dry
solution (about the same ratios as you mention) and adding the water
just before use.   I add a pinch of potassium chloride and a pinch of
calcium chloride to the dry mix.

I believe this is slightly hypotonic, I would suggestt one teaspoon of salt.

Oops.  You're right. Your suggestion is actually the ratio I use (not
surprising, since I "stole" the idea from you.   I intended it to be a
rough knock-off of Breathe-ease!)

I mix 2 parts salt, 1 part baking soda, small amount of potassium
chloride and a small amount of calcium chloride.  Then, I mix 2 parts
of this to 1 part Xylitol.

I made  two dry quarts of this stuff four or five years ago, and am
still using it!   Fortunately, my chronic sinus problems have pretty
much resolved themselves, and I only irrigate a few times a year.
