I was wondering if someone could help. I had a very strong cold
at the end of 2006. I took no medications, besides gargling and
aspirins, I just let it run its course. In the middle of January I
felt fine again. The only problem that persisted was that I had no
sense of smell or taste. But then I noticed that everything had a
strange phantom odour that would come and go. Coffee didn't smell like
coffee but instead the phantom smell came. Same thing car pollution,
perfumes, wine, etc. Even when I go outside instead of smelling the
freshly cut grass I get the phantom smell. If I close my eyes I have
to put an object directly under my nose to be able to identify it. My
taste buds have gone crazy too. Some foods taste the same way the
phantom odour smells like. I thought this would all go away but it is
now almost the end of March and things are status quo.
Does anyone have any experience with this strange ailment?
Thank you for your help.........in advance....Andre

This is not so strange. A viral infection can cause swelling of the
olfactory connections and because they are within a very narrow bony canal,
they can lose circulation. In the early stages strong anti-inflammatory
medication may restore the smell.
Phantosmia comes when in healing, the nerve fibers get mixed up and, for
example the coffee nerve goes to the perfume receptor.
Consult your doctor to see if they think a course of anti-inflammatory meds
might help at this stage.

Thanks, I'm going to a neurologist on the 30th. I think they want an
MRI. But I'll ask about the anti-inflammatory meds.
