Hello all, I came down with what I believe is sinusitis a few months
back after coming down with a cold.  Everyone around me was sick with
this cold and after it ran it's course I had symptoms of a sinus
infection.  The main symptoms were a totally clogged nasal passage by
about evening time and bad fatigue.  I think there was a lot of
sneezing at first also.  I don't have a lot of runny mucous, more of a
hard crusty buildup as it were and some nasal discomfort.

I saw a physician last month and he gave me a prescription for
amoxicillin.  I felt better after a few days, as far as the fatigue
was at least, but the antibiotics did not totally clear the other
symptoms.  I did get a refill but on the last day I got a bad reaction
to the medicine and brokeout pretty bad.  I am still having the
symptoms and some blood when I blow my nose.  I also noticed today
that there was a bit of mildew on my pillow when changing the pillow
case so I am going to toss that and get a new pillow tomorrow.

I am going to call the doctor back and maybe get a referall, but just
wondering if anyone has any tips/hints.  I believe I had rhinoplasty
on the same side maybe 15 years ago, but not sure if if this has any
relation to my current problem or not?  Is there any good nasal sprays
I could get that would help my nasal passage from getting so clogged?
It almost feels like someone poured cement in there by about 7:00 PM
each evening.

thanks,
CTV

the best self-treatment for sinus trouble is nasal irrigation.  Google
for that phrase to find various methods that you would prefer.

Before seeing a specialist, you should do two things:

First, try another antibiotic that's not related to amoxicillin.
Levaquin or Avelox have the best coverage for sinusitis, though Cipro
might be a bit cheaper.

Second, if you've gotten to the point that there is mildew on your
pillow, you may well have mildew elsewhere in your bedding or elsewhere.
 Treat those aggressively.

Get an anti-allergy/mite mattress case for your bed and buy new pillows. Use
bleach when washing your bedding. Look for other sources of mildew to
eliminate.
Read the FAQ for this group. Start saline nasal irrigation twice daily. This
will help get the gunk out. Google Hydropulse. The amoxicillin didn't clear
your infection but daily irrigation might.  Hopefully you don't have
sinusitis, but if it turns out that you do, welcome to the group.   AW
