I just found this site and hope someone could help me with a sinus
problem .          My nose has been bloody for 4 months - pus and blood
-plus I have run a low grade fever, headaches  for 4 months -I have been
on 4 antibiotics ,CT scan was ok - and still have the low grade fever
-nothings changed.        Is this normal for a person that has chronic
sinusitis -& allergic rhinitis  ?  I am wondering if I might have some
other unknown problem .     Trish from Chattanooga , Tennesse -- artist
-love to read and watch some reality tv-Grey's anatomy --Thanks ;)

Hi, Trish, yeah, it's typical of an untreated/inadequately treated sinus
infection.  I've had "normal" CT scans while suffering from pain and
bloody infections, too.

Read up on irrigation with salt water, drink lots and lots of H2O, see
if you can get a long course of a more effective antibiotic; Mayo clinic
advises one to 3 months depending upon results.

Read this group's FAQ.

If you haven't seen an ENT, you need to do so, and take your CT scan
with you.  He/she might see something the radiologist didn't see.
There are a lot of us that have had "normal" looking CT scans, but
extensive disease.  You may need minimal surgery to open up the ostia
to allow better drainage since this has been going on for so long
without any relief.

If you have allergic rhinitis and can't get your symptoms under control
with medication and avoidance strategies, it's no surprise you get sinus
attacks.

You say you're an artist.  Do you paint?  If so, maybe you should wear a
respirator rather than expose yourself to paint fumes, or to resins from
musical instruments or any other chemicals you use in your work.

Some antibiotics are more effective than others, and with a stubborn
sinus infection you may need to be on such an antibiotic for a long
time.  Have you tried 4 weeks' worth of Avelox or Levaquin?

Have you consulted an ENT?

Another poster wrote to you about sinus irrigation.  Take a cup of luke
warm water and add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Mix thouroghly and then use a ear washing bulb and spray the solution
into your nose while holding your head back.  Continue to wash until
you have used up the contents of the cup.  Do this about 3 times each
day.  I also use afrin spray to keep the nasal passages draining.  I
use a steroid spray to prevent the sinus tissues from becoming more
inflamed.  Do this plus your antibiotics and you should be able to
shake this infection.  You need to keep those nasal passages flowing so
the bacteria does not build up in your sinus passages.

Definitely try the saltwater rinses. I don't think anything has helped
me as much as that.

Finally I have found a group of people who uderstand what I am going
through.     The last antibiotic ( neurotin ) I used for 3 weeks -was
about 2 weeks ago -still no luck - this was prescribed by my
Pulmonologist ( copd ) I have seen My Internal med man-and now an
allergist . Getting shots for many allergies .Still running a low grade
fever have not got any answers ,I am waiting on the results of blood
tests from  INT  DR.to see what might be causing fever . Still have
bright red bool in upper nose and some pus . The allergist put me on
Allegra and Singular. My temp now is 99 -( normal for me is 97.7) I am
concerned as to what problems may occur with a long term temp . Since
Sept 6 .

It still sounds like to me you have a low grade sinus infection.  I
don't think
neurotin is an antibiotic.  If it is what I am thinking about, it is
used for
neuropathic pain;  it wouldn't do anything to treat an infection.  Even
if your
bloodwork turns out to be normal, that doesn't mean you don't have a
sinus infection.  If this doesn't resolve and you don't get any
answers, there
is a very good infectious disease doctor in Atlanta that I see who
mainly treats
chronic sinusitis.   (I live near Kingsport, Tn.) His name is Andrew
Pugliese;
however, he is very aggressive in treatment  (I am on my 2nd round of
IV antibiotics),
If it wasn't for him and Dr. David Sherris in Buffalo, NY., I really
don't believe that
I would have made it this far.  My problems went underdiagnosed for
years and
I ended up wiith a bone infection (excruciating pain) and blocked
sphenoids and frontals.
This was all very subtle on CT scans.  The osteomyelitis showed up on a
bone
scan that it took me 3 years to get, and I still have to travel 6 hours
to get treatment.
It has literally been a nightmare.

Hopefully, you won't have to resort to this, but since you are so
close, you might keep
it in mind.
