I have had chronic sinusitis for many years. A lot of my sinus issues
appear to be from very slow
nasal cilia. The nasal irrigations help until I'm hit with a viral
infection and the cycle of sinusitis
keeps repeating itself. Right before my first sinus infection years
ago I had depression with extreme
emotional stress and hit with every viral bug around me. I have had
chronic sinusitis ever since.
Is cilia the hair that lines our nose? Is the hair similar to the hair
on our skin? What causes the hair
in the nose to move on its own? Certain industries with dusts from
chromium, cadmium,nickel.
and copper slow nasal cilia creating stagnant mucus in the sinuses. I
was wondering if vitamin/mineral tablets that contain these minerals in
the supplement can create the same problem
with slow cilia?

The vitamins/minerals do not affect adversly nasal cilia, it is breathing
the chromium that impairs the ciia.
Please review FAQ for methods to improve your cilia movement.
Note: the on the shelf saline solutions contain preservatives such as
benzalkonium which inhibit cilia action. Best is a Ringer's type solution
without preservatives.

In my readings, there seems to be a connection between allergies and
depression. FYI, they developed SSRI's like Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil
from anti-allergy drugs. Cillia are like little hairs but are NOT
actual hairs. They are an outgrowth from cells and they are hairlike.
Something causes the cellia to move just like the tail of a sperm
moves. This movement is not directed by muscles. The cillia move in
one durection - they move upwards from the lungs and outward from the
nose. Cigarette smoke and other contaminants harm the cillia and
prevent them from moving the mucus and junk collected in the mucus from
moving out of your body. If the cillia don't move you junk out, it
stays in your nose and lungs and starts to rot - therefore causing an
infection. I have problems with waking up with one nasal passage
totally blocked. I used to get some real problem infections. I now
use one spray of Afrin, a vasoconstrictor med, in order to move the
mucus out of my nasal membrane so it can drain and not become infected.
Steroid sprais also prevent your nasal membranes from becoming
inflamed and keep your nose from becomming filled and blocked by mucus.
When I use Afrin, I immediatly get a lot of good flow meaning that my
cillia are working well in moving the mucus out of my system. I have
been able to keep my system infection free for quite some time now.

Hi Fred,
Thank you for the information about cilia. Do you use the Afrin daily?
If so, do you have
any rebound symptoms? I also thought there was a preservative in Afrin
that can slow cilia
over time. That is why I had avoided it longterm. I'm glad you are
infection free. Sinusitis
can sure ruin a person's quality of life.

The nasal cilia move the mucus to the back of the throat where it is
swallowed.
cigarette smoke may irritated and stimulate the cilia. Many persons get
nasal congestion when they stop smoking due to the removal of the "sandpaper
effect".
Question. Given the choice nearly 100 % of my patients prefer isotonic
saline to hypertonic for spray. How many here prefer hypertonic?

I prefer hypertonic: 1 tsp kosher salt/cup of water.
