Fungal Sinus Polyps

Hello,

I'm 21 years old and have had three surgery to remove polyps. (2
doctors). My original ENT sent me to a different one in order to try
getting rid of the polyps via anti-fungal medicine.  He tried
amophotecerin and Spornox while I had polyps - could not get rid of
them.  He then did surgery (3rd one) and after that he tried treating
it with anti-fungal medicine again.  To No Prevail.

My question: I have tried a lot of medice and I have tried anti-fungal
medications as well, which is farely new.  Does anyone know of any new
research on nasal polyps or any new types of medicine to help get rid
of them for good.  I am starting to lose hope that I will ever get rid
of my polyps.
Thank you and any response will be appreciated.

Alex:

I don't have an answer for you but can you tell me:

1) Did the surgery remove the polyps and then they grew back ?

2) How difficult was the surgery/recovery??

3) What symptoms were caused by the polyps (breathing problems and/or
infections??)

1. Yes every surgery I had was to remove the polyps.
2.  Surgery recovery is not that bad.  I didnt have much pain during
after any of them.  The only bad part is being very uncomfortable after
the surgery.
3. My polyps always grow to be very bad.  To the point where I cant
breath in or out.  It doesnt even make a sniffle sound when I try
because the polyps seem to cement the openings shut.  I also have
developed asthma because of them.

Still looking for inquiries into my original question please.

Alex,

I've never had nasal polyps, and even though I do think that my
major sinus problems were caused by mold (in more ways than one),  I
think that the antifungal theory is being over exploited in many cases
as a "cure all"  when in fact there are probably just a minority of us
for whom that is the answer (or partial answer) unless you are actually
allergic to mold;  then desensitization might work.  It is my
understanding that nasal polyps are caused by inflammation, and that
prednisone is effective, but at your age, I don't think you would  want
to start on long term systemic steroids.

Have you used any of the nasal steroid sprays like Nasonex, Flonase,
etc.?   If they are ineffective, you might try someting like pulmicort
respules.  You can use it with a nebulizer with a special attachment
for breathing through the nose and getting better penetration into the
sinuses. I got mine from Sinuneb, but I'm not sure they exist any more.
You get more of the steroid into the sinuses this way.  I'm always
hesitant about advising the use of steroids, but this route is much
safer than the oral route.

These are just some of my thoughts.   Others who have actually had
polyps could probably answer your question better.

Thank you,  And yeh... i have been down the oral steroid road.  That is
the only thing that works, but once off it the polyps come back.

Do you avoid salicylates?

Oral steroids and steroid nasal sprays are two completely different
treatments. I think it was Prednisone I was taking orally, when my polyps
first started getting bad. I only went through that treatment once and
that was enough. The nasal sprays like Nasacort, Nasonex, Flonase
mentioned in the previous post worked very well for me, no side effects or
complications but I have no insurance and can't always afford a regular
supply of the stuff at almost $100 per little spray bottle, about a
month's supply.
So look into the sprays if you haven't already.

Polyps may return because of use of salicylates or because here is purulent
material in the nose. One reason pulsatile irrigation often reduces the
return of polyps is the removal of infected material.

Hi - I know exaclty what you are going through. I can now breathe
clearly and no polyps have returned after my surgery. My specialist Dr
Amin Javer is now treating me with pulmicort irrigation. I irrigate
twice a day and my nose has been clear for 2 months now with no other
meds. I was also on sporanox and ampho b and prednisone. This new
method is working wonders. Suggest you google his name.

This has been written about and is valid. What dose of pulmicort are you
using to how much saline.

Nasocort AQ is also the same thing.

I have used the pulmicort treatment off and on for the past year.  It
works great.  I use .5 respule with 30 ml of saline.

my polyps were getting pretty bad when I started seeing my new
allergist.  My ENT Dr wanted to do surgery, but admitted that they
start growing back in the recovery room.

I use one pulmicort respule and mix with 8 cc's of saline.  It draws up
into a 10 cc syringe (no needle).
I lay off the end of my bed to invert and slowly release the
saline/pulmicort into my sinuses.  I inhale slightly to get the
solution into my upper sinus.   I lay forward for 10-15 minutes and
then let the solution drain into the sink.  Don't blow yet.  Give it
another 10 minutes or so.  Cram a bit of kleenex up to catch the drips.
Now blow.
I did this twice a day and it shrunk the little suckers down to where
they can't be seen.  I am sure that they will return, but it has been 6
months so far, and nothing.  I feel a lot better.
