This is my first post and I hope someone can help me. My husband is in
need of sinus surgery. All of his sinuses are involved and we've been
told because all the areas are blocked, along with polyps, that he
needs someone very skilled to do the surgery because there is a risk of
damage to the eyes or brain. We have found if you go to a "teaching"
hospital who has an expert sinus surgeon, this person may not be doing
your sinus surgery. You may be in the hands of a "learning" resident
performing the surgery with the expert observing what they do. They
don't give you the option of choosing the expert sinus surgeon to do
the surgery. We learned this the hard way after traveling a few
hundred miles to Cleveland Clinic. When the ENT told my husband a
resident would be doing the surgery, my husband said "not on me"! This
doesn't make sense to me. They tell you all the risks and then tell
you the resident is going to perform the surgery with the sinus expert
watching! One slip by the resident and it's not going to matter that
you have an expert in the room! My husband said he will not let a
resident in training do the surgery with the potential risks involved.
The only way he'll have surgery is if a highly qualified surgeon is
going to perform the surgery himself. Especially when the idea of
sinus surgery is to get it done right the first time and not have to
keep having it re-done! He does not want a bad problem made worse. Do
any of you know of a skilled sinus surgeon in the Midwest who performs
their own surgeries?
Thanks!

Dawn, must it be in the Midwest, or will you travel? If you're near
Ohio, I believe that Pittsburgh may not be too awful a distance. I
think that may be where Dr. Kennedy is. You'd have to verify whether he
observes/supervises or is hands on the whole surgery, though.

The best in the Midwest is Dr. James Stankiewicz at Loyola University
Medical Center in Chicago (Maywood).
