wondering if any other sinusitis sufferes go through stages of not
being able to smell or taste. I had septoplasty and polyps removed a
few months ago which didn't help my symptoms a lot and my loss of taste
and smell has gotten worse, particulary taste. i might be able to taste
for one week straight and then not at all for the next two weeks. i
would appreciate any advice that anyone could offer me.

Unfortunately, I have not had a sense of smell, in 18 years. I have had
sinus surgery twice.

Hi Carina ... :-)

I just had the surgery done on December 5, 2005. Below are my present
experiences. Any advice helpful. I gargled with listerine on day 4 and
can not even taste listerine.

I will let you know my progress - hope you get this and please let me
know your updates too. A nurse told me it takes a long time to return!
HOW LONG ... a little scary.... hope for best.

Sinus Polyectomy Surgery & deviated septum repair       December 5,
2006

Hi :-)
Anyone have this surgery done? Since December 5 I have kept a log of my
problems and symtoms. I hoipe someone who has had this can reply.
Please read each entry ... and comment. I cannot wait until the packing
is out on 13 Dec '06. T H A N K S !!!!

Diary entry .....

Dec 5

Surgery today. Lot of pain and blood. Lot of bleeding. Hard to swallow.
Took  about 2 pain pills. Diet, liquids and puried food.  Cannot sleep
at all due to sinus and nose packing and my efficient epiglotis
blocking airways at moment of passage to sleep the muscle relaxes and
blocks airway - then I gasp and remain awake - day ONE!   Temperature
was 99.8F  Cold chills similar to flu.

Dec 6

Home. In bed all day. Nose swelled big, blood. Pressure in eyes, ears.
Eyes tear because tear ducts are blocked by the backing I was told. I
hope? Tried regular diet.  Cannot sleep at all! Temperature was 99.4 F
Cold chills similar to flu. Cannot sleep at all due to sinus and nose
packing and my efficient epiglotis blocking airways at moment of
passage to sleep the muscle relaxes and blocks airway - then I gasp and
remain awake - day TWO!  Changing dressing to nose about 10 times /
day.

Dec 7

Home. In bed all day. Nose swelling is going down a little. Eyes still
tear. Ears still have  pressure. Can taste nothing at all. Sleep tried
with 1/3 (5mg) tablet of ambien. May have slept nonconsistently for
only about 30 minutes tops. For three days have only 30 minutes sleep.
Carefully took a shower today.  As I type this it is taking forever for
next Tuesday to come. This is the day I will have packing removed!!!!
It is so difficult each day. Each day seems to be making a little more
notable progress. Sneezed three times today with mouth open. Does not
appear to dislodge any clots.  Time now, 20:00hr and my temperature is
stabalized to 98.5F Called hospital with questions: 1 Normal to have
tears flow? YES. 2 Pressure in ears, plugged? YES.  Cannot sleep at all
due to sinus and nose packing and my efficient epiglotis blocking
airways at moment of passage to sleep the muscle relaxes and blocks
airway - then I gasp and remain awake - day THREE!   Have had no sleep
since December 5.  Changing dressing about 10 times / day. Mucous and
blood seeps out external nose and down throat.

Dec 8
First day went outside to Walmart, Wendys and Post Office. I think the
fresh air is good for my lungs being I cannot breathe thru my nose.
Must keep at bay lung infection wearing mask as much as possible in
apartment to filter some allergens lurking here seems to be helping a
little. I cannot wait for packing to come out on December 12, 2006.
Temeperature is good. 98.5 F  I am not out of the woods yet. Concerned
still for excessive bleeding when packing comes out and clear fluid
leakage from brain if during surgery there was a cut in the paper thin
bone separating the brain and sinus cavity. Cannot sleep at all due to
sinus and nose packing and my efficient epiglotis blocking airways at
moment of passage to sleep the muscle relaxes and blocks airway - then
I gasp and remain awake - day FOUR!  Miserable with this packing in all
my sinus cavities and nose. No taste because old factory nose blocked
with packing. Slept maybe 15 minutes, somehow!?  Called hospital and
nurse said no taste following this surgery, will take quite some time
to return, it is normal. She said tearing eyes are normal too because
of a lot of packing used after surgery. PLugged ears too, normal.
Ringing in ears. Pressure in eyes. Tuesday cannot come soon enough!!!!!
Top of head remains achy and sore! Headache and eye aches.

Have 5 more days to go!!!!!!! Anyone please comment if you have any
experiences with post operative sinus surgery. Thankyou very much!!!!
