Help--Biaxin is doing a number on me!!!

I'm taking Biaxin XL for this damn sinus infection.

It's hard to say but I think it has been helpful (but I still get sick sinus
feeling and sore throat when I don't get enough sleep).

I am on day 14 of a 21-day course. I'm hopeful it will totally wipe out the
problem, but I'm still not sure (definitely MUCH better than before I went
on it).

My current problem started today:  REALLY BAD DIARRHEA.

Anybody have this problem with Biaxin?? It seems strange to have this occur
now, after 14 days. Is that not unusual??

I've been taking yogurt but I didn't the last 2 days, so I'll get back on
it.

Any other suggestions?

Yeah, you might try taking some saccaromyces boulardii, too.

What is that?? Where do you get it?

It's a probiotic that counters c. difficil, one of the causes of
antibiotic related runs.

You should be able to find it in a health food store.

You should take it and some multiple live culture yogurt during the day,
hours after your first Biaxin dose.

Except that most diarrhea associated with antibiotic use is caused by
things other than C. difficile. In the case of Biaxin, it's because the
macrolides are chemically direct GI irritants. Probiotics can't help
there.

Yes, they're GI irritants, but they also can cause diarrhea due to flora
die off.

I have never had any problems with Biaxin XL.
I get extraordinarily happy and giggly on it.
I never have diarrhea on it. And it always works.

I often get diarrhea with BIAXIN.  It's a side-effect - a small price
to pay for some.

Most likely, the Biaxin finally killed off the friendly good bacteria
that live in your intestines, upsetting the balance of nature in there.
The macrolide class of antibiotics seems to be notorious for doing
that; happens to me all the time with Erythromycin too.

You might purchase some acidophilus capsules in your drugstore to
repopulate the bacteria in your gut.  And drink plenty of fluids of course.

OTOH, really bad diarrhea can be the start of an allergic reaction.  My
allergic reaction to oral penicillin started with diarrhea and soon
progressed to hives.  Be alert to signs of allergy like rash, hives,
etc.  If you start getting hives or pimples on your body, then go
straight to the Emergency Room of your local hospital.  Don't waste time
posting questions to us on this NG about it!

OK thanks for the advice.

No D since yesterday afternoon-- but not much solid food eaten either.

Back on the yogurt

Yogurt isn't enough to rebuild the resident flora. I have taken strong
antibiotics for months and never had stomach problems. I take Natrol Bio
Beads, an enteric probiotic pearl size pill which makes it through stomach
acids into the intestines where it is needed. There are some other more
expensive enteric probiotic pills, but this one works really well. I find
these at Wild Oats and think many other stores carry Natrol brand
including Walgreens.

Yes, and if you take probiotic supplements, don't take them at the same
time you take the antibiotic pills.  Space them apart by as much time as
possible so that the antibiotics won't kill the bacteria before they
have a chance to start growing and multiplying.

I thought that I said kind of the same thing about NOT eating bacteria
rich yogurt at the same time one is on antibiotics as it will kill the
bad, the good and the yogurt bacteria and I was bashed!

Apparently, this precaution isn't necessary for saccharomyces boulardii.

Right-- although biaxin XL is time release.

D seems to be gone for the moment and sinuses are fine...AT THE MOMENT!!
