For the last half year or so, I've been sporadically using an Ayr
irrigation bottle with Ayr pre-made saline packets (like this:
http://www.bfascher.com/product.asp?ID=33&groupID=3).  I'm finally going
to go ahead and get a waterpik with one of their tips.  Please post how
you make your solution.  Here are a couple of the "recipes" I've seen
recently posted in this newsgroup.

-------------
I use the water pik along with the Dr. Grossan tip (that I bought 6
years ago -- they last forever)  ...I pour about a tablespoon (give or
take) of pickling salt into my pik container, then fill it 3/4 full with
warm tapwater.  ...If the salt mixture isn't correct, I either add more
salt, or more water, but I'm usually pretty good at judging the amount
after using it so many times. ...I normally irrigate once a day (or
sometimes, every other day), but if I sense problems, I step it up to 3
times per day.   ...Jon
-------------

You can start with a neti pot (about $12-$18 for a non plastic one) and
making your own saline mixture.  I mix two cups of kosher salt with a
tsp to a TBS of baking soda and of xylitol.  Use 1 tsp. of this per 2
cups distilled or boiled and cooled tap water.

You can also buy an attachment that goes on a waterpik if you already
have the device.

Susan
------------

At first, I thought I'd find that people pretty much just use salt and
water.  In those first two posts alone, there are two different kinds of
salt and also baking soda and xylitol. So many possible things to add!
What do baking soda and xylitol do?  Is there a FAQ that talks about the
various things you can add?  And is there a FAQ that shows how to keep a
waterpik clean?

Thank you.

Andy,
About water piks, I don't use one, but Murray Grossan has posted about
his hydropulse: he runs bleach solution or hydrogren peroxide through
it--how often I don't know. He was referencing when he uses it in the
office for different patients. Personally, when I use a Neilmed bottle,
I put vinegar into it, as suggested, after most rinses, let it sit, and
then rinse it out and air dry.
My mixture is based on a personal bout with pseudomonas infection--so
I acidify it: I use 4 tsp of kosher salt to a quart of boiled water
with a tsp of white vinegar.
Here are some letters to the editor about an article on irrigation:
the ENT's talk about irrigation and what they advise: the ENT from
pittsburgh advocates frequent cleaning of the water pik to eradicate
"water loving organisms such as pseudomonas"
 http://www.annfammed.org/cgi/eletters/4/4/295
I think a list of mixtures and cleaning processes should be on the
FAQ list.
The ENT from Pittsburgh advocates hypertonic saline, while Murray
Grossan advocates isotonic.

Google has many recipes listed.
For me, I start with a gallon of distilled water, add 6 tablespoons of
Kosher salt, 2 tablespoons baking soda, 1 teaspoon of potassium chloride and
1 teaspoon of Xylitol.  If I had pure calcium chloride, I'd add a teaspoon
of that also.
In the past I used the same formula using only Kosher salt and baking soda
in the same amounts as above and that works fine also.  AW
