Stinky sinuses

I recently had sinus surgery to remove polyps and generally decrease
congestion. I got a sinus infection during the healing process and it's
still there despite irrigation and a round of antibiotics (augmentin).
The weird thing about this infection that I've never experienced is
that it stinks *really* bad. The odor in my sinuses is so bad that my
wife can smell it if I'm near her and breathing through my nose. It's
disgusting. It smells like a cross between smelly feet, old cheese, and
bad dog food. Very nasty.

I went to my ENT and he squirted an anesthetic up my nose and cleaned
some stuff out but that didn't help at all. Now he wants me to go in
and do it again. Of course, that's yet another $40. Everytime I visit
him it's another $40.

Can you think of anything else I can do to resolve this problem?

Thanks!
John

Change the antibiotic.  Try one in the quinolone class like Levaquin or
Avelox.

sounds like you need a cat scan to rule out chronic sinusitis--might be a
superimposed fungal infection

i have the sme problem and now awaiting surgery for a right maxilalry
sinusitis

i hav found irrigating with a nasal irrigator--dont hae the name but it
sounds like neti

you put a messwure amount of salt ( non iodinated) and fill with luke warm
water --body temperature is ideal

take s few attmps to learn hopw to sue it but it really cleans out that nasy
stuff--important to meassure the sal and use warm water so as to not cause a
generalized irritation of the nasal lining of the nose

John,

Post-FESS I am experiencing the same horrible problem.  Taste and smell
are both rancid.  I'm thinking of popping for the $100 pulsing
irrigation system.  If you find any relief, please let me know.

I get "The Smell" every time I get a sinus infection. The antibiotic
that always clears it up for me is Flagyl (metronidizole). Your mileage may
vary.
