Sudafed has been replaced by a similar compound in the US: similar to
pseudoephedrine, but unable to make crystal meth with it. You need to
sign for it now.
Some people live on the stuff: like allegra-D (long acting sudafed),
claritin-D.
Personally, I can't tolerate it--I get hyper and my heart races. When
phenylpropylalamine was on the market as Entex, I could stand
that--although I developed twitches in my face. It's off the market,
because as a diet pill, used in high doses, it was associated with
hemorrhagic stroke in women. (After over 3 decades of use.)
Unlike the topical nasal decongestant sprays, there's no dependence or
rebound, but a lot of people just can't tolerate the oral
decongestants. Count me as one.

To clarify, there's two types of Sudafed (including the generic
equivalents) you can buy: One with pseudoephedrine is the older of
the two. It's the one you have to sign for. The other is on the
shelf.

When I went to get a 2nd opinion, (and wound up using him as my
treating doctor), he prescribed me a 30 day prescription (along with
steroids and Levaquin) of pseudoephedrine and something else (forgot
which). Anyway, it was about the size of a horse pill! Take one of
those and drink some coffee, and I'd be speeding most the rest of the
day. Curious that even though I got some of the excitability and
palpatations, they weren't to the degree I'd get with Sudafed, which
is a much lower dose.
I still buy Sudafed behind the counter type when I'm congested. It
works better than the newer stuff.
