What about irrigating with metronidazole cream?

Anyone ever tried this?  Is there any possible utility to it?  I think
the ingredients are water soluble, but I'm not 100% sure.

Susan, metronidazole is prepared for either a topical preparation for
rosacea, or it comes as a vaginal cream for bacterial vaginosis.
Metronidazole has a fairly limited spectrum of activity as an
antibiotic: it's really good for anerobes. If I ever tried it, I would
use the vaginal preparation, as it's made to be applied to mucosa. For
sinusitis, metronidazole is usually used with another broader spectrum
antibiotic: like a cephaloporin plus flagyl.
Recently, I've seen too much clostridium difficile colitis and we use
it for that: an overgrowth colitis caused by antibiotic use: but
recently starting to pop up even when antibiotics weren't used. Also,
it's getting more virulent. I spoke a GI specialist who had a really
interesting take on it: as c.diff is a spore forming bacteria, she
first treats with a 10 day course and then weans patients off: two days
on and one day off, to let the spores bloom.(Completely off target from
your question...)

Mine is topical, so you think I shouldn't irrigate with it?  It's Noritate.

I'm on Augmentin atm; I had mild sx, and just irrigated out gobs of
stuff today.  NEVER has happened before, I think it was a year's worth.
ICK, very colorful.

Ah, let them bloom, then home in for the kill.  I've been fortunate
enough not to get c. diff, though I know other Lyme patients who have.
Saccaromyces boulardii (sp?) has been very effective against it, some
folks say.

Susan,
I once flew with a cold, got a sinusitis, took biaxin and ultimately
irrigated out more colored disgusting stuff than I had ever gotten out
before. I actually called my husband in because I was so amazed and
disgusted. (He's not glad I shared.)
It sounds like you may need to switch antibiotics. It may be that
you're ridding yourself of infected mucous, or the augmentin isn't
doing its job. Sometimes upping the dose to Augmentin XR will help:
it's 2 grams of amoxicllin twice a day vs. 875 mg twice a day, and some
moderately resistant bugs will yield to the higher drug levels.
I just don't think the noritate will add much or get where it needs
to go, and I'm not sure what's in the vehicle (the base)--if it's water
based or oil based.
 What a pain.

I just started the Augmentin back up today; I guess I should have taken
the full 30 days.  I have a refill.  XR has worked very well for me in
the past, maybe I'll ask the new doc for it on Tues, but I frankly think
she may be a tad overwhelmed by my endocrine wierdness and this is a
first appointment.

It's glycerine, glyceryl, trolamine and one of the parabens.  It was
just an idea.
