Do I have Sinusitus?

Hi, I have suffered from sinus problems for over a year now, but am
somewhat confused with my symptoms. A lot of people describe "Post
Nasal Drip", "Facial pain" and "Thick green or yellow discharge",
however I never get these symptoms. The only symptoms I feel are nasal
congestion, a "spaced out" feeling and general malaise. The strange
thing is I can feel these unwell feelings for a week, then feel ok for
a week, then feel bad again for a week etc etc This cycle goes on and
on and really reduces the quality of my life. On the days I am feeling
bad, I just don't feel like myself, and haven't got the energy to do
anything.

I have tried irrigation, but I never seem to flush anything out, and
seem to irritate my sinuses even further. Should I only be doing this
irrigation on the days I feel ok?

If anybody else feels similar symptoms I would really appreciate some
advice.

Many thanks...

Neil.

Well you have rhinitis anyway.

I would see both an ENT and a very good internist and ask them both to help you
figure it out.....

Have you tried oral decongestants like Sudafed, for those times when
your nose is really stuffy?

Have to ask. Do you have any allergies? I was suffering from these
symptoms for a couple of years and couldn't figure out what was wrong
with me. I exercised regularly and ate healthy but still these symptoms
persisted.

Then this year, I had my first major sinus infection and now I have
post nasal drip, aches, etc. I now realise that the previous years of
unwell were due to low level infections but my body was able to keep
fighting them off. The immune system was just working overtime. I was
getting digestive problems, sleeping trouble and persistent unwell
feelings but never a full-blown infection with yellow discharge, etc.

I now know I have dust-mite/dust/cat/etc allergies which were the cause
of these problems. So, if you haven't already, check for allergies and
take measures to reduce your exposure.

Chris, thanks for the reply...

Yes I have always suffered from hayfever, and seem to be sensitive to
dust in the bedroom... maybe this is why my symptoms can flare up at
night. I also notice that during hot nights, keeping my bedroom window
open worsen my symptoms... maybe it's the pollen getting in...

Yes I can relate to having low level infections, I can feel like I am
getting a cold one day, then the next day feel fine... my immune system
is probably overworked, and stress can really worsen my condition.

It has always confused me, as things like irrigation has never helped
me, and I never experienced facial pain, headaches or seen any of this
yellow/green discharge people talk about.

Has your condition improved by taking anti-dust measures? Maybe it's
time to dust proof my bedroom!

Well, I'm no longer waking up with red eyes in the morning which was
happening frequently before using dust-mite covers over my bedding and
pillows. I also have a hepa filter running at night and I try to clean
the bedroom every week.

It's definitely helped with the allergies but unfortunately I think all
those years of untreated allergies has led me to develop chronic
sinusitus. I've been having a hard time over the past 7 months with
congestion and low-level infections in my sinuses which I can tell by
the drainage, smoky phantom smells, ear problems and aches in between
and around my eyes.

Why don't you  go for a comprehensive allergy test to see what you're
really up against? Then you can know if dust-mites/dust or whatever are
your problem.

I can't give you a diagnosis, but that is the way I started out;  also
had low grade fevers, no PND, pain, etc. at that time except for stuffy
feeling behind nose;  would take an antibiotic and fever would go away
for a while;   then started with moderate fatigue in afternoons to full
blown severe fatigue and malaise that eventually wouldn't get better
with antibiotics to debilitating pain and inability to function at all.
I had to quit my job.   It turns out ALL of the openings into my
sinuses have been too small to drain properly;  probably just enough to
not show much on CT scans.  It took a really astute ENT to find this.
See the rest of  my story under "continuing sinusitis saga"   It is
probably very rare for all of the openings to be to small,  but, if I
were you, I would definitely get this checked out, especially seeing if
the main ostia into the sinuses are big enough.  Sometimes just opening
them up will solve the problem without removing tissue, bone, etc., a
very minimal procedure.  I'm not suggesting you have this done, just
check it out.
