The augmentin cleared up the infection. I have been off of it for a
week. I've been taking OTC Claritin and using a Nasocort spray. It has
been about three days since I've had the need to use irrigation with
the Nasaline syringe. IOW, so far, so good.

With the past year, I dread getting another infection and having yet
again to go on another round of antibiotics. I realize that prevention
is the key, and I must admit that I may have brought this last one on
myself by waiting too long before getting my Nasocort spray refilled.

In lieu of antibiotics, has anyone had any success with any of the
steam treatments with various essential oils at the onset of an
infection? Do these treatments work at all, or are they just so much
quackery? (like the one I found about breathing colloidal silver steam
vapor.)

Have you tried intranasal Bactroban at the onset of a sinus infection? Yes.
it's an antibiotic but it is topical and not systemic. Using the intranasal
Bactroban (mupirocin) for 2-3 weeks twice daily in a spray bottle will
almost always stop my sinus infections (along with Hydropulse saline
irrigation twice daily). Google past discussions on this topic to read the
various methods of using intranasal bactroban.

I have some Watkins brand spearmint-eucalyptus extract that I sometimes dab
under my nose when I'm congested but this only opens my nose up, and doesn't
help with sinus infections. I also have a facial & sinus steamer which I
have used essential oils. Same thing - it will open your nose up temporarily
but does nothing for infection. The sinus steamers are cheap, less than 20.
so give them a try if you want. The oils are about 5. each.

Thanks for the info. I'm supposed to see my doctor in November. I will
ask her about Bactroban - if I don't get sucker-punched by another
sinus infection before then. I sincerely hope that all of the
preventative measures I am taking will eliminate the need for any kind
of antibiotic at all. Time will tell...
