I've been suffering the effects of Sinusitis for about 6 months, the
symptoms of which have amounted to the following:
*Dis-orientation/brain cloud (The main reason I hate Sinusitis)
*Headaches (forehead, and wrap around the back at times)- usually
fairly mild, but ever-present. They were very severe for a short time
directly after I was sick (just a cold, I believe), but at this time I
didn't know that I had Sinusitis and almost fled to the ER. Currently
they're pretty mild most of the time but seem to be aggrevated by a
"busy" environment.
*Weird congestion related issues. My nose has gotten a bit stuffed up
from time to time, but actually in recent weeks it has been fine. My
ears seem to get plugged up pretty easily - twice in the last 6 months
one ear has gone useless for more than 24 hours. I've had a little
phlem (the reg yellow variety) daily for as long as the other symptoms
have been around.
*More recently I've been very lethargic in early-afternoon hrs, and I
seem to get lightheaded.
After months of comtemplating just what was wrong with me I ended up in
an MRI scanner. This, in its expensive way, diagnosed me with "moderate
sinusitis." A series of anti-biotics ensued:
*First a 2-week run on Augmentin - Didn't really do anything
*Second was a 2-week run on Cipro. About a week into this I noticed
that my breathing was wheezy, and I felt generally crumby. I ended up
dropping it because I thought I might be allergic.
*Now I've begun a 4-week (4 pill/day) run of Augmentin once again.
My doc wants me to make an appointment with a Neurologist to make sure
nothing else is going on mind-wise. After perusing some of your posts,
however, I think Sinusitis is the culpret. I have yet to see one of
these ENT's you people speak of...
So, I'm just appealing for a bit of advice. Do you think this is in
fact just the Sinusitis? Should I see the Neurologist, or plead for an
ENT? Thanks people, I appreciate anything...

Hi there,
Sounds like what I've been suffering for over 7 months especially the
light-headed, off-balance feeling. Do you have allergies? I didn't know
I had any allergies before and this was what had caused all my
problems. I reckon an allergy test with an allergist/ENT would be
helpful.

Did the MRI show anything else besides sinusitis? Which sinuses did it
involve? Did it show any involvement outside the sinuses? I would get
the report and see what it says. MRIs can overdiagnose sinusitis, but
they are also good at picking up fungal sinusitis. If there is a
neurological problem, it should show up on the MRI, but with your
symptoms, it wouldn't hurt to have a neurology consult anyway.
As others have said, CT scans are best to pick up bacterial sinusitis,
but they don't always do so, and even on endoscopy, especially if you
haven't had surgery, it is difficult to see all the sinuses. For
instance if the problem is a blockage in the frontal or sphenoids, and
you aren't draining on the day of the exam, all can look fine. The
disoreintation and forehead and wrap around the back pain could be
indications of both frontal and sphenoid sinusitis. You definitely
need to see an ENT, but remember, even then sinusitis is very difficult
to diagnose sometimes especially sphenoid. Take your MRI and report
with you. If this hasn't cleared up in 6 months, there is definitely a
problem. And when you say just sinusitis, it can cause much misery and
suffering if it isn't addressed and corrected in a timely manner.
