The osmolyte xylitol reduces the salt concentration of airway surface
liquid and may enhance bacterial killing.

The thin layer of airway surface liquid (ASL) contains antimicrobial
substances that kill the small numbers of bacteria that are constantly
being deposited in the lungs. An increase in ASL salt concentration
inhibits the activity of airway antimicrobial factors and may partially
explain the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis (CF). We tested the
hypothesis that an osmolyte with a low transepithelial permeability may
lower the ASL salt concentration, thereby enhancing innate immunity. We
found that the five-carbon sugar xylitol has a low transepithelial
permeability, is poorly metabolized by several bacteria, and can lower
the ASL salt concentration in both CF and non-CF airway epithelia in
vitro. Furthermore, in a double-blind, randomized, crossover study,
xylitol sprayed for 4 days into each nostril of normal volunteers
significantly decreased the number of nasal coagulase-negative
Staphylococcus compared with saline control. Xylitol may be of value in
decreasing ASL salt concentration and enhancing the innate
antimicrobial defense at the airway surface.

Interesting! Maybe I should add it to my saline/bactroban spray?

Just want to add! I have used Xylitol for the last 6 months and the funny
thing is , I'm the one with the bad nose, but all my kids and wife get the
colds?? I have been cold and infection free for the last 6 months! Prior
to Xylitol I got an infection or cold about every third month!? I would
still like some better breathing but, not having a sinus nfection every
few months is a big PLUS!!(side note) I use the Xylitol in my waterpik
once a day!( some times everyother day), But it seems to be doing me some
good!! :-) give it a try!

At what dose do you use it? There was a previous suggestion of 4
tsp/500cc to create a 5% solution. I've seen big containers of it at
Whole Foods for a moderate price. I've bought Xlear spray, but it would
be so much cheaper to make it up myself in my saline solution.

My mistake, the solution was 4 tsp/200 cc for a 5% solution.
What has worked for you?

Xylitol works out to two tsp _ 5 gms, so two tsp to 100 cc equals a 5%
soltuion. How does the Whole Foods price compare to the price at
http://www.xylitolnow.com/

Thanks for correcting my math about the solutions. I didn't check to
see how many pounds were in the container: I did check the Xlear.com
site, and they sell a pound for 6.99 and up to 5 lb for 24.99, seems a
little less expensive than xylitolnow.com. I believe that Trader Joe's
carries it as well. (The nearest Trader Joe's is in the next state, but
I make special trips to shop there...)

Do you get your xylitol from http://www.xylitolnow.com/?
