I went to my ENT doctor today to get results of latest CT scan.
Apparently my ethmoid sinus problem (per the December CTs) was more
that the scan picked up a sinus infection that never went away.
Fortunately, I had switched doctors, and this doctor put me on 21-day
Levaquin, prednisone and decongestant - then I did the 2nd CT scan a
couple weeks ago.  Sinuses clear.  Only abnormality was the presence
of a deviated septum (which the first doctor operated on 10 years ago,
and which apparently didn't hold).

In any case, if my experience means anything, getting a 2nd opinion is
vital to your health.  By trying other options (ampho-B,
irrigation, and especially the 21-day antibiotics) an unnecessary
surgery was prevented.

And the doctor said I didn't need to do surgery on my deviated septum,
unless I was finding it hard to breathe.  I don't have that problem. I
didn't have that problem back in 1995 either, but I let the first
doctor operate on me thinking it would help my recurrent infections.

The planned course from here (on advice of my ENT today) is to see an
allergist.  He said it would take about 18 months of shots to build up
my immunity.  Also, I am supposed to keep taking Nasonex, and Astelin.
On my own, I will continue to irrigate as necessary. As you can
imagine, I can quite happy that I'm going to be spared the pain and
trauma that would have awaited me.

That's teriffic, Rick.  I'm glad you avoided the whole experience.

I had surgery about two weeks ago.  While I haven't had any of the
horrible experiences I was warned about, I've felt just awful ever
since.  I expected to feel better every day, but the symptoms and
general  yuck persist .   Also had some  reactions to Cipro, which
I've taken lots of times in the past with no problems.

By the way, nobody EVER MENTIONED that long, long vacuum!!!

Rick,

I'm glad to hear that you responded so well to the 2nd ENT's course of
treatment.  I had surgery to correct my deviated septum about a year and
half ago and now wish I'd been more diligent about seeking a second
opinion.  My hopes were much like yours; that the surgery would help
with my recurrent infections.  Maybe it did, but if so, it's been only
marginally.   Just out of curiosity, where do you live?  I'm in OK and
am still looking for a solid ENT.

Andy,

I live in Houston, so I'm afraid I can't help you out with that. Just
be diligent, read everything you can, and ask as many questions as
possible, and certainly don't be afraid to get a 2nd, 3rd or however
many opinions you need to make you comfortable with your decision.
Luckily for me, Doc #2 took it upon himself to take a culture, which
led to ampho-B which, while it didn't work, made me think that he
cared enough to cure me - not just cut on me because that's how Doc #1
*operated*.  Having had a failed history with Doc #1 for the deviated
septum made it much easier for me to accept the opinion of Doc #2
(which turned out to be the correct one).

Good luck,

Rick

Great!  Glad to hear it.

In fact, I had to get a 3rd opinion before I found the ENT who knew best
how to treat me.
