Septoplasty:
A surgical operation to correct defects or deformities of the
nasal septum, often by altering or partially removing supporting
structures.
As I've posted before, in 1995 I had a septoplasty done by Doc #1. I
thought all was well until my CT scan last December showed, (along
with blocked right ethmoids) that my septum was still deviated.
Even though Doc #1 recommended surgery for the ethmoids (not another
septoplasty), I went to Doc #2 for a second opinion. Even though he
thought surgery was reasonable, for a variety of reasons, three being
that the septoplasty apparently didn't hold, Doc #2 suggesting
ampho-B, and him putting me on a 21-day course of Levaquin (which I
just got off of, and I feel so much better), I've chosen Doc #2 as my
surgeon of choice should I elect to have surgery.
I know I just said I feel much better, so why entertain surgery, you
may ask. If I only had occasional infections, say 2-3 a year, I
could live with that. But I have had them near constant for almost a
year, and it interferes with my work and life to a great degree. The
old saying I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired applies.
Anyway, I had my latest CT scan done over a week ago. I go back to
see Doc #2 in 10 days. I've ordered the records from the 1995
septoplasty to be sent from Doc #1 to Doc #2. Since the ampho-B
didn't work, and irrigation only slightly, if I start feeling bad
again very soon with a sinus infection, then it will be surgery for
me.
But having or not having sinus surgery to clear my right ethmoid is
not my question. It's more: what are the risks of my getting the
septoplasty done again? My feeling is that since the doc's already
going to go up there, I might as well have it straightened again, so
in case the sinus surgery doesn't clear up the problem, he would
suggest the septoplasty later. Doc #2 said that I don't need to have
the surgery if I can breathe ok through my nose. It seems that I do,
but I felt the same way back in 1995. Septoplasty then did seem to
cut down on the number of infections I was having, IIRC.
Anyone have a second septoplasty? Is it worth it? Any danger of
collapse? If you were in my place, and you were having sinus surgery
anyway, would you also do the septoplasty (since I'm going to feel
miserable after surgery anyway).
Thoughts?

I would not have any surgery that was not strongly advised by the surgeon. If
he needs to do it, he will do it. Insisting on it is not likely to add
anything to the equation in my opinion.
There is always a small risk of septal perforation.
