Has anyone ever used vasoline to coat their sinus cavities?

About 10 years ago, my allergist suggested I take clean vasoline on a
que-tip and coat my sinuses. His theory was salt and other sprays
irritate and dry you out, what I needed he said was to coat them like
you put on chap stick for dry irritated lips.   My problems with my
sinuses are that they basically burn and ache, but aren't clogged.  I
hardly ever have stuffed sinuses.  My face hurts or my sinuses will
swell down into my teeth and gums.

I did this and got immediate releif.  I actually have got pretty good
at almost inserting the entire que-tip into my head via my nose.  Now I
know how thoses magicians used to hammer nails into their heads that
way.

I ask my fam doc the other day if I could coat my sinuses with
neosporin and he said yes, sure.  This seems to work with soothing them
for a short while also.  Though, nothing works for long.

I was thinking of trying to irrigate.  Right now, if I get desperate, I
suck tap water up into my head and let the chlorine kill whatever is
inside.  This hurts very badly, but seems to work occationally also.

I am concerned about the irrigation drying me out more.  For those of
you that irrigate, do you think it dries out your sinuses?

Perhaps Dr. Grossan will respond to this, I hope.

My understanding has always been that it's dangerous to use petroleum
products, or any non water soluble moisturizer into the nose or nostrils
because the grease gets aspirated into the lungs, which can't clear it out.

There are water soluble lubricants available.  Other than in sex toy
shops, I mean.  ;-)

I am not sure what you mean here. You use saline irrigation to bring
moisture to the nose/sinuses. When your nose is dry, it means it needs
moisture.

Vaseline is NOT water soluble. It can drip into your lungs and remain there
indevinitely. Shows up on X ray. You should ONLY put water soluble stuff in
your nose for that reason.

I tried it and didn't see any benefit.  If you try it, DO NOT put the
product too far in your nose.

I also use Ayr Gel in the same way (similar problems as yours) and I
understand that Ayr Gel is now available in a swab form which I haven't
found in the stores yet.  Best of all (although nothing REALLY works)
is Ponaris which is an oil based herbal mixture that uses a dropper and
coats the passages.

Unless it's water soluble, it does NOT belong in your nose.

You must mean to coat your nasal passages. I doubt you can reach into your
sinuses.
