When it happened to me years ago, it was thrush from antibiotics,
steroid nasal sprays and too high blood sugar.

My dentist, who is one of the best in my area, has seen two different
causes of this in his experience:  infected post nasal drip forming a
so-called "biofilm" on the back of the tongue; and oral thrush (Candida
fungus infection).

If you've been on certain antibiotics, they kill off the normal mouth
bacteria and allow Candida to gain the upper hand.

Here's a test you can do:  Buy a tongue scraper and try scraping the
yellow gunk off your tongue.  If the yellow gunk refuses to come off
without your tongue bleeding, then it's most likely thrush.  Because
Candida actually sends down hyphae (roots) into your skin to hold on.
Gross, huh?

The gunk comes off when I scrape it.

Hi Steven,

I just used a course of ammoxicillin (in this case because a tooth was
removed and there was a infection below it).
I also noticed this yellow stuff on the back of my tongue. If it is the
candida fungus, what can i / should i do about it?
Maybe see the GP?

Some advice would be helpfull.

Thanks!

Andries

Stop taking antibiotics for quite a while.

If the candida is mild, you might try treating it yourself.  Use a
tongue scraper after every meal and avoid sweets that the candida feed
on.  Use frequently an OTC mouthwash that contains the active antifungal
ingredient cetylpyridinium chloride.  (Here in America, the brand that
contains the highest concentration of it is Cepacol.  Scope contains a
lower concentration of it; Listerine contains none.)

If after a few weeks, those measures fail, then you can ask either your
dentist or your GP for prescription topical antifungal drugs.  I've had
good results with Mycelex troches (lozenges).  Be sure you tell them
what other medications you are taking, since antifungals can have some
interactions with other drugs.

Hi Steven,

Thansk for your reply.
Actually,  i am not taking any kind of medication, it was just the
antibiotics for the infection, and that course ended 2 weeks ago.
I will go see what we have here in Holland on OTC stuff with the ingredient
you described, i hope they know it..:-)
