Hello, I'm new here, but not new to sinusitis, nasal polyps and a
complete loss of smell. I've had two endoscopic sinus surgeries and
countless courses of antibiotics over the past 13 years. When I went to
my ENT in March he referred me to Mayo Clinic. Mayo did another CT scan
and said image guided surgery would be a good option. All my sinuses
were packed with polyps and the bone surrounding my Sphenoid sinus has
a gap in it. Like a *hole*. This makes me a little nervous. What does
it mean to have a hole in a bone so close to the brain? And is imaged
guided surgery expensive? What is the recovery time for this? Is the
pain about the same as what I've had with my other two surgeries? The
first was extremely painful. The second was painful. Neither was
effective for more than a few months. All that pain and misery for
nothing. Dr. Friedman at Mayo didn't lie to me. He said he believed
this surgery would give me nore time of feeling healthy, especially
with the nasal rinse and steroid injection he would prescribe, but it
wasn't a cure.
Eek! I'm looking forward to feeling better and being able to smell
again. But like I said, I'm nervous about it. Help!! Anyone else had
this surgery or know anaything about bone loss?

I think he just means that that area may be difficult to navigate without image
guidance.
Image guidance located the instrumentas during surgery. That's all. I does
not say what area is cut etc.

Is the bone less due to infection? If so, it probably would pay to try to
open up those sinuses some more to try halt the infection......

My orbit was eroded from polyps. My ENT explained that
constant pressure exerted on bone from polyps can cause
them to erode. He cut part of a turbinate, leaving one
end still attached, lapped it over the damaged area and
stitched it on. During the time that my polyps were so
bad, I had severe sensitivity to light in that eye, it
constantly watered and a slight bulge formed under it.
The bulge is still there 3 years later but is not real
noticeable. My surgery definitely made me better as
he said he took about two coffee cups full of tissue
out of my head. I was 100% blocked with polyps. Some
were about 1/4 inch from hanging out my nostrils. Each
night fluid from my sinuses would drain out of my nose
run down my face and pool in my ear. I actually resorted
to packing my nostrils with tissue so I could sleep better.
Over time I have gotten worse again. My polyps are not that
bad but I have 100% of smell most of the time. Occasionally
I get a faint whiff of something. I am considering having
surgery again this fall.
