HydroPulse question again

Hi,

I recently got hold of the HydroPulse irrigator to help me with my
sinus/ear problems and to see if my cilia will be restored. After using
it, I can detect some strange lingering odor in my nose. I can't
describe it but could this be just the Xylitol from the Breathe-Ease XL
powder? I did not get this smell when using the Neilmed rinse bottle
with their saline powder. I might add, my sense of smell has not been
good for some years and occasionally do have strange odors in my nose
that last for a day or so.

thanks,
Chris

I never detected any smell from using Breathe-Ease. You don't say how long
you've been using the hydropulse, but is it possible that your sense of
smell might be creeping back and you haven't quite gotten used to smelling
things again? I hadn't been able to smell much in 20 years and this year I
can actually smell flowers.  AW

I've detected such a smell on occasions, though not usually.

It's certainly possible there might be a smell I wouldn't have detected.  I
used quite a bit of Breathe-Ease the first year after I bought my Hydropulse
but at the time I still couldn't smell much of anything.  I thought my sense
of smell was gone forever so I continue to be amazed at my rediscovered
sense of smell.  AW

I don't know if I think the smell is from the product, or from the
condition of my sinuses at the time.

Thanks august and Susan - you also helped me out at the alt.med.allergy
group.

I have only been using the HydroPulse for a few days. I think it may be
due to the state of my sinuses. I seem to have quite abit of thick
white mucous. My left side can smell a little, but my right side can
hardly smell anything.

August, that's very encouraging that you managed to improve your sense
of smell. I hope I will too.

Also, I don't seem to be getting any post-drainage of liquid after
15-20minutes. Is this normal?

If your mucus is very thick, drink lots and lots of water to thin it.
Really, it works! That's always an allergy sign for me, and
desensitization has helped a LOT.

I didn't either, at first, and I don't always now.

Thanks Susan,

So densensitization helps get rid of the white mucous? That's great. I
better try it. I do try to drink lots of water also.

Often you are not aware of the liquid since it is "thin" and is moistening
the throat in the normal manner.

AW: when did your sense of smell return? Did it return fully? Did you use
other means besides the Hydro Pulse and Breathe.ease?

I bought my Hydropulse in June 2004 after many many years of chronic
sinusitis. I'd get acute sinusitis 2-4 times a year. In 04 drug therapies
weren't helping the CT proven acute sinusitis that I'd had for 3 months. I
began regular Hydropulse use along with Breathe-Ease for the first 6 months
of irrigating. Irrigated 2-3 times a day - every day. I also began taking
allergy shots about a month after starting with the Hydropulse. Slowly but
surely I started improving and the infection cleared. Within a year I began
to notice smells again. I was able to quit sudafed and antihistamines after
having taken decongestants and antihistamines for over 30 years.

Now I do only irrigation 2X day, Flonase once a day and some Nasal Crom
instead of the shotgun drug therapy of past years. I've cut back to
bi-weekly allergy shots. This year I really noticed being able to smell all
kinds of things that previously simply wouldn't register as smelling at all,
whether pleasant or unpleasant. It's great to walk around and smell flowers
and experience cooking smells.  I don't know if my sense of smell has fully
recovered but it's sure a lot better than at any time in my adult life.

I think the Hydropulse has been a great tool for me. Sinusitis had been
grinding me down for a long time.   Thanx,    AW

This happened to me also.  I didn't make the connection
till I read your post.  I've had a constant smell no matter
where I am that reminds me of car exhaust.  Looking back this
happened about the same time I tried the Breathe-Ease.  I'm
going to stop it and see if it goes away.

hhggffdd, thanks. How long have you been using the Hydro-Pulse? I
sometimes have smells that linger in my nose for a day or so. Does this
happen to you? I wonder if this is due to impaired ciliary function.

About three weeks.

Yes.

I think it has more to do with the olfactory nerves.

Hard to say but perhaps the bacteria are coming out of the sinus cavities
and the sense of smell is starting to return.
