Hmmm. Is there any consensus among ENTs and allergists about this, from
those who recommend irrigation?
Many here also use alkalol in their irrigation water. Does your specialist
also recommend against that?
Your doc might have a point. Many of us who irrigate regularly have
chronically inflamed nasal passages, and it's possible that regular use of
these substances might make it worse.
Have there been any studies of this? Take a group of people regularly
irrigating using these substances in their solution, compare to a control
group who start with similar symptoms as the first group, but irrigating
with plain saline, or saline and baking soda, etc. See if the first group
had less infections as a result of using antimicrobial substances in their
irrigation fluid. See if first group had more inflammation as a result of
these substances. Also compare with a group using alkalol in their
irrigation fluid, see if there was any advantage in using that, and any
disadvantage.
Have any such studies been done?
