Long time posters here, what's your story?

mr_lamouche - 17 Apr 2006 02:05 GMT Hey guys,
I just wanted to ask what the story is of the long time posters here, I guess to try and give myself an idea of how things might be.
Have been to an ENT finally, CT scan totally clear, am still completely fatigued with weak legs and arms, and regularly bad pain just above left eyebrow plus watering eye. I also get a sort of swollen throat, not conventionally like a sore throat, just really dry like I'm thirsty, a little sore, and drinking water doesn't fix, this sometimes causes problems breathing.
I was just starting this thread to ask some of the regulars here, what stage are you at? Did you feel awful at one point and get better? I've been sick for 7 or 8 months, I feel very weak as I described and have had lots of stuff ruled out. Sinuses are the one thing I do believe are my problem.
Does it get better, does this resonate with anyone? The weakness, problems breathing occasionally? I realise there are questions asked here all the time, I guess I just want to see what improvement people have here, or what future there is for people with really troublesome sinuses.,
Having seen allergist/gp/ENT, my last thing to keep me working and trying hard is the Grossan Hydropulse, anyone experienced a massive improvement after this?
Can sinuses make me feel as run down and weak as I do? (like after a day's lifting for someone healthy, keeping in mind I've been checked out fairly extensively over the last year)
Appreciate any help as always....
Thanks,
Ronan.

Weak arms and legs suggest a neurological problem.
I would find a really good internist.
Obvious possibilities include anemia, thyroid etc.

Hunches are not a good way to go.
Never be sure that their check-outs are adequate. I think they are not.
Go to Mayo if you have to. They will figure out what is causing weak arms and legs.

Do you tend to drop things or have trouble grasping them?
Do you limp when walking or running?
Do you have tingling sensations?
mr_lamouche - 17 Apr 2006 10:29 GMT I would definitely not say as weak that I drop things or can't grasp them, nor do I limp when walking or running.
It's more like a general weakness, like the way you'd feel when you have a bad flu or virus,I guess arms and legs are where I notice it. On a bad day I'd still be able to stand at work all day ok (I stand at work), but would just feel that jelly type sensation you sometimes get after you've gone for a big workout the day before, or spent the day lifting stuff. Not a strong tingling I wouldn't say. I guess I've been back and forth to my GP so many times that I trust him to have suggested something neurological, he wrote to my ENT saying he believed sinuses were the cause of my problems, but I guess it's possible he's wrong.
One Dr suggested my weakness could be caused by sleep apnoea, I haven't checked this out yet and in the absence of other ideas am thinking about it, whenever I can afford it.
The CT scan was a surprise since as I said I have a fairly consistent pain and watering in the same place, my nose is always swollen and dry and I have mucuous in my throat constantly and that raw throat feeling. I mean these all seem like classic sinus symptoms.

He might want to revise his opinion now that you have the results from the ENT. Have you asked him? You can ask hin what he sugegsts to do next.
>One Dr suggested my weakness could be caused by sleep apnoea, Yes it could.
Do you tend to fall asleep if you to a movie (or whatever you call that in the U.K. - "the cinema" maybe) ? That would be an indication you are not getting enough sleep.
>I haven't >checked this out yet and in the absence of other ideas am thinking [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] >pain and watering in the same place, my nose is always swollen and dry >and I have mucuous in my throat constantly and that raw throat feeling. Hmm raw throat might not necessarily point to sinus exclusively. It sounds more like a generalized low-grade infection or low resistance..
I would check white blod cell morphology and other indicators of immune status.
Now, your immune system definitely is adversely affected by insufficient rest. and if you answer my question above you will have an indication as to that.....
>I mean these all seem like classic sinus symptoms. I do not doubt that you have such symptoms.
.......
mr_lamouche - 18 Apr 2006 11:28 GMT Yes we would say "the Cinema", indeed. I'm actually Irish, but we don't have an exclusive turn of phrase for that one I guess. Perhaps movie is more common now too.
I don't fall asleep in the cinema or in similar situations, I mentioned this to my Dr and he said I was quite young, at 23, and that sleep apnoea could be causing alot of physical fatigue but I was still fighting off the really dire need for sleep aspects of it.
In other developments, my ENT called me today to have a review appointment, so perhaps the CT scan is not clear afterall.

mr_lamouche - 28 Apr 2006 13:53 GMT So I officially have a sinus infection according to my CT scan, my front left ethmoid sinus has infected mucuous in it, which makes sense as this is where all my pain has been. The ENT was keen to try antibiotics, plus nasonex/otravin/betnesol and regular salt water rinsing, for a month, before he does any operating.
I'm kinda dubious about antibiotics working but I guess if they don't there is the possibility of an operation which the ENT said would be quite routine.
Does this all sound ok, is there anything else I should be doing myself here, or anything people find fault with in the ENT's procedure, besides the obvious stuff like eating well, vitamins etc?

Well the insurers require a trial of antibiotics befroe surgery so you have to give it a try.
As to surgery being routine, personally I would (and did) pick a sinus surgeon as a separate exercise from getting the diagnosis, Surgery is harder than diagnosis and you need the most experinced surgeon you can get.
Duke - 15 May 2006 14:45 GMT Have your thyroid checked ( blodd tests) .Read in advance of your appointment so you know to ask specifically what your TSH score was , rather than accepting "normal". Discuss sleep apnea ( do you snore or startle yourself awake with a "snort" or gasp for air at any time ? If so, you may have it). Either of these conditions can certainly create the symptoms you suggest. Also, sinusitis can as well. You can certainly present with a normal CT scan and have infections. May of us do. I just had the worst infection in years this winter, presented with normal CT Scans , and finally got better on doxycyline. Recalcitrant rhinosinusitis. Would not wish upon my worst enemy. Continue your research. Consider ordering a book on the topic ( Powells online ) from Dr. David Kennedy. Exact title escapes me, just do a search.
