I moved from western canada (not a long growing season) to southern
california (year round growing season) about a year and a half ago.
as soon as i moved, my sinus's became extremely clogged.
the only way i could get relief was to use over the counter sprays like
afrin or 4-way, but eventually the afrin would stop working altogether.
using 4-way causes an hour or two of clear breathing, but then i need
another "hit". i can still use the 4-way but every hour or two i need
more. after a month or two with no afrin i can go back to that, and i
can use afrin maybe every 4-6 hours to get relief, then after a few
weeks it stops working again.
i moved to nevada for ten months (las vegas) and had the same problem.
moved back to california, same problem.
when i was younger i had seasonal allergies to ragweed, dandilion, and
other pollens, but never had this problem with my sinus's becoming THIS
clogged.
how bad is it? if i use nothing, and someone taped my mouth shut, i
would likely pass out because i cannot breathe at all. period... cannot
breathe through my nose.
using something with pseudoephedrine in it helps... if i use that and
4-way i dont have to use the 4-way as often, maybe every 3-4 hours or
so.
i have tried saline solution... no help there at all.
my diet did not change when i moved, but where i used to live there was
not alot of pollen, only in the late spring/summer, and that was only
april-october because of the cold climate.
PLEASE give me some comments. this is just insane.

I've got the same problem--have had allergies since I was a kid. Get
off the Afrin and 4-way--sounds like you are addicted, and are
suffering from "rebound" congestion.
Go to a doctor and get tested for allergies. My doctor started me on
allergy shots (I'm allergic to grass, mold, pollen, pet dander, dust
mites), and put me on Advair, along with Astilen and Flonase. Seemed
to help, but then the #$%#@ insurance would not pay for my Advair, so
now I use Singular instead (which is not nearly as effective).
Good luck!

Hi,Its called rebound effect. You should never use OTC (over the
counter} sprays like these for over 3 days. ( I say 2) The 12 hour ones
are the worse. Some are 0.5 solution, others extra-strenghth 1.0...
(extra problems) Use the 0.5 and use it wisely. The 4 hour ones. As you
call it (another hit) thats what your doing. Its no longer working and
you need more. If you moved and had no problems then its the air
quality, (allergy, mold, dustmites, ragweed) the list is long. You need
to find what has changed. Humidity? Dryer? Warmer? ect. Pollen? Took me
2 years to find my problems. I had problems in the winter. (most people
in spring and ssummer) but I had dustmites by the millions and mold
growing in the duct work . (someone use a wood duct in the basement) I
pulled it down and it testes for mold. Everytime the furnace blower went
on I had problems. Took it out. I use a dehumidifier in the summer and
keep it at about 30% never over 35%. Also my bedroom has A True-hepa
filter in it. Get the best and biggest one. Dont buy a small one.
oversize it. Then on low fan it still works good. Keep it on high when
not in the room. Door closed. Replace carpet if you can. Clean
everything. I can go on forever here. If someone taped your mouth shut
as you said you would not just pass out, u would die. You must wean off
the sprays. It hard to do. I started with the 0.5 solution sprayes (not
12 hour ones) Then a few days later I used it in 1 nostral only, then
switched daily, then got flonase, rhinocort from DR. tool claritin
(generic) Then Zrtec ect.. See a Dr. and ask for a steroid spary or what
he/she says. It takes a few days to work though. Sometimes longer. Tell
the Dr. your hooked on the OTC. Go to a ENT.(not a general DR.) They
will know. You might get lucky and only need something like claritin or
Steroid spray. Or a allergy test might help. But I hear good/bad on
them. My problems went 3/4 away after the hepa filter, dehumidifier,
carpet removal. Not raking leafs, ect. It took 3 weeks to get off OTC.
But i Got flonase and rhinocort samples. They helped 60%. Dr Grossan or
Steve have good ideas here so also ask them. Irragation is good but it
seems you are to clogged up to notice. Give that I try after you are
opened up more. Dont wait to see a DR. It just gets worse. Good Luck.
Let us know how you do. GO TO A DR........

Right - as per the others, the swelling may at this point be in large oart due
to phyical addiction to the decongestants. That is, easing back on them will
make it worse because of the addiction.
I can be fixed with oral steroids for a short while or by other methods.
The OTC drugs such as Afrin are riskier than prescribed ones in some
repects....counterintuitive, but that's the case......

then why did the problem develop so fast in the first place. within 2
weeks of moving i was completely plugged without using anything in my
nose, ever.

When the problem is triggered by something geographic-specific, the two
obvious suspects are allergies and air pollution. BUT: once it's
triggered, it can cause sinus problems that can linger long after the
original trigger has been alleviated.
To test this, I would suggest you taking a short vacation back in
western Canada (where you implied you had felt OK) and see if the
problem gets better. If not, then you may now have a sinus problem that
was triggered by the original move but is now persistent. Many people
who complain of "permanent allergies" actually have chronic sinusitis.
You need to see a physician who can do the proper tests.

I don't know how the smog situation in LA basin is currently but in the past
when I would visit I would progress to acute sinusitis within about 2 weeks
after arrival. Maybe you just aren't used to or able to tolerate the local
air contents and quality. Allergic responses can vary greatly in different
geographic areas. AW

Hi, Read my first reply. Have you seen a DR.? ENT? Like I said before,
air quality, alleries ect. to a new location. I went on vacation and
after the first night I blew out junk out of my nose and a large amount.
After a hour I was breathing better than ever. The air was good the
humidity low. That worked for me. But maybe low humidity is not for
everyone. Are you afraid of Doctors? Its ok if you are. We just need to
know. We are here to help and support you. Do u live in a apartment?
House? Near factories? Forest? Ect... More info is needed. Also we are
not Drs. (maybe 2 are) But we can help you if you tell a little more
info on the living areas ect. I understand you are frustrated, we all
have been there here. But more info is needed. Let us know.

i am nto afraid of the doc, but dont have the money right now for a
specialist i am afraid :-(
i have the problem in las vegas in the nice new house where the wife
and i are, and in california where i work, indoors or out.
live in the urban jungle... always have. i also live 1 block from the
ocean, but its happened in the desert (vegas) and the coast (california
- orange and san diego county) as well as tijuana mexico.
i am thinking allergies since it started when i moved to where all the
allergens are in the air year around, but that might be wrong.
i want to try some holistic solutions. i would like to detox my body
and see if i can do this without antibiotics, if possible.
sorry took so long to reply.

You may not need to see a specialist yet.
If the problem is nasal allergy, any primary-care physician can
prescribe corticosteroid nasal sprays for you. These will not only help
you wean yourself off the Afrin and 4-way nasal sprays, but they may
also help relieve the swelling that got you to use those sprays in the
first place. If you're lucky, that may be all you need.
Any primary-care physician can also try you on a course of nonsedating
prescription antihistamines like Zyrtec. If you have allergies, those
should help.
I would give that course of action a try.

This may sound like an obvious question, but: Did you consult a
physician? If so, what did he say? If not, then that's obviously what
you need to do. Self-treatment with OTC meds is not getting at the root
cause of the problem.
It could be allergies, but now that you're older it could also be a sign
of something funky in your sinuses that is exacerbating the problem.
Without any more information it's impossible to say. You need to see a
physician and be tested for allergies, sinus trouble, etc.
