let me start by saying im 17. a bit ago i noticed my left nostril was
severely stuffed up. after further, and more recent inspection, i
started thinking of it as more severe...
i started googling and diagnosed myself as having septal hematomia
(this scared the sh.t out of me because i did try cocaine once / have a
slight (and i guess natural) saddle nose). got to my physician and he
said no - but he wasnt sure about it either.
he thinks its an infection and ive been on antibiotics for 2 days now,
but we both have our doubts. it "feels" to me, like a deviated septum :
but this (again) could be the internet scaring me. so what im wondering
is : before my next appointment, is there an obvious way i can know the
difference / what i have with these symptoms? i really just want to get
on with my lifeeee
best,
nick

I dount that anyone here could possibly tell whether or not you have a septal
hematoma. I wouls even be darn careful before accepting that as a diagnosis
except from a very expericned rhinologist.
After all, a stuffy nose ids an extremely common symptom of swollen tubinates
due to allergies. Yes septal seviation can contibute too but is unlikely to be
the whole story.

It is good to test theories in your mind like that. However, I I have done it
many times and come up with many more false hypotheses than accurate ones.

No, because it is very common symptom of nothing more than allergies or
infection to start with...

There's nothing to be really scared about concerning a deviated septum.
If I *had* to guess, you may have a mild to moderate deviation that
is slightly blocking your left side, and this is contributing to the
allergy/infection/inflammation in your left side.
If the issue doesn't clear up with this course of antibiotics, the
physician will probably put you on a stronger antibiotic. If that one
doesn't clear it up, you could request a referral to an ENT.
What kind of drainage, if any, are you seeing? Any
green/yellow/brown mucus?

I was perhaps 13 when I first notice that I would have a tenancy to
have one nostril totally stuffed up. I now know that the membranes in
the blocked side are swollen and full of mucus. I can open that
blockage with a spray of Afrin. I suggest that you use this drug a
little sparingly becasue it can become addictive and you will have what
is called a "rebound affect". Just one spray in the blocked nostril
will probably be enough to open your nose.

i just recovered from a pretty bad flu - my mucus is mostly clear
(occasionally yellow). im just uncomfortable in my body and would
probably be better off going to therapy than the physician -- but
(haha), ill try the afrin,
i can hardly breathe from the nostril & need something like this

It is addictive if used for over 3 days. You must not use it more than that.
