Stomach won't tolerate antibiotics

I have been taking Clarythromycin for long to avoid recurrent sinus
infections.

I have now a sinus infection that I need to treat before it gets ugly
and goes down to my lungs, which is already beginning to happen.

My problem is that my stomach has given up on me. For about two weeks I
have been taking stomach protectors (proton pump inhibitors), no
antibiotics, to no avail yet. I have stomach pain and as soon as I take
one pill it gets really bad.

I have suggested to my GP that he gives me intravenous antibiotics
while my stomach recovers. He says that IV antibiotics would also make
my stomach suffer because it affects the same stomach bacteria once
they enter the blood stream.

Is this true?

What can I do?

I know, I know all the issues about antibiotics, for me, I cannot help
it, I need to take them.

Thanks,

Tony

Ask your doctor about sucralfate.  It dissolves in your stomach and
coats it with a thick gel.  You can't take it with meds, though, they'll
get bound up in the goo.  You have to take it an hour or two after.

Hi Susan, I will certainly ask him about sucralfate. Thanks.

I don't know exactly what your doctor said but with all due respect, you
may have misinterpreted it.

Is it your stomach that's upset or your intestines?
If it's your stomach, then proton pump inhibitors can reduce stomach
acid but they won't stop your stomach from going into spasms resulting
in reflux, vomiting, etc.  There are lots of meds that can quiet down
your upset stomach.  Intravenous antibiotics will bypass your stomach
and avoid stomach upset.

If it's your intestines (abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramps, etc.), that's
caused by the oral antibiotic killing off the bugs in your gut.
Intravenous antibiotics will do that too.  You can try taking
acidophilus supplements.  They repopulate the normal bacteria in your
gut.  (Ordinary yogurt doesn't have enough active culture to do the job,
you need lots of acidophilus supplement.)

Hi Steven,

Thank you for your comments.

My problem is, most surely, with the stomach, pain is in that area and
no diarrhea, (although plenty of gases). My doctor is, in this case, a
new young GP and I agree with you more than with him, IV abx should not
upset the stomach much. I will tell him one more time, and, if needed,
I will start the process to see a stomach specialist.

I am taking plenty of good quality bacteria supplement as well.
Unfortunately, I am an old timer in this.

Thanks,

Tony

Many doctors deliver the antibiotic via pulsatile irrigaiton. Works well.

Hi Dr. Grossan,

I have never taken antibiotics via irrigation but I would like to try
it.

What do I need to tell my GP or my ENT exactly?

Thanks,

Tony
