I was just thinking about how crazy it is that there are so many
different irrigations systems and medications to take for chronic
sinusitis or nasal polyps. As a help to everyone struggling with
regiments that don't work I thought it would be useful for people to
post what they do throughout the day, medication wise to control their
problems.
Here is mine:
In the morning: I take Guaifenex 600/120 TB SAETH
I also do Sinus Rinse (saline rinse)
In the evening: I take 10 mg of singulair
Before bed: I take two Mucinex (1200 mg)
I take 10 mg of Zyrtec
I do the Sinus rinse again
I do two sprays of Flonase in both sinuses
(I am usually on Predisone but that is only when the polyps come back).
I also take Ayr saline nasal mist throughout the day.
I hope this isn't a pointless thread because I think ideas of what
others do can really help.

I don't have a "regiment." I don't even have a platoon. I *do*,
however, have a regimen.

I irrigate with warm water and saline a few times a week when not
infected. I use Astelin spray daily, and Zyrtec most days.
When infected, I irrigate daily, sometimes with Bactroban, sometimes
with H202 in the saline.

I irrigate AM and PM
Flovent AM and PM - Into nose not lungs.
Singuliar - evening
GSE 3x a day. Don't know if this helps though.
Bromelain 3x a day. I have stopped this and will try Clear-Ease brand
when it shows.
I have taken one or two prednisone to knock down polyps
I will start taking allegra 180 again soon.
I have taken Astelin, I don't care for the taste. Not sure it works any
better than Allegra for me though.
I don't like taking decogestants. Mess with my blood pressure too much.
I do have some duratuss that I will take though. Usually cut it in half.

My doctor says reflux from my Gerds comes up during the night and I wake
up with the flem that you are talking about. Sometimes is a chalky white
and other times it a pale yellow but no infection .

Everyone else has posted the medication/irrigation advice......I figure
i'd post a couple of non medication related strategies that have helped
me:
I notice a nice improvement when sleeping in an elevated position. I
also try to sleep on my back as much as possible. In the past, I
slept with my head buried in my pillow most of the night, and I noticed
I would wake up with frontal sinus issues and mild headaches much more
often.
The thing that has helped me the most has been doing 30 minutes of
cardiovascular activity immediately upon waking. This really seems to
kickstart the cardiovascular system and will get the nasal passages
open and the mucus flowing. I try to wake up, drink 16-24 ounces of
water, and immediately begin a cardio routine.
Increased water intake has helped me. As I said earlier, I drink a
good bit of water immediately upon waking. I also drink 16-24 ounces
of water right before bedtime. The simple rationale is that I don't
want to leave any chance that I could get slightly dehydrated during
sleep. Dehydration can lead to decreased mucus production. I don't
have difficulty getting to sleep, and I almost never wake up to use the
restroom, so this strategy doesn't cause any additional issues for me.

Hi, Wow I am really surprised by all this. Dose it not bother you that
you take all these meds? Im not knocking you. It just scares me. I have
the same problems. But my Dr. is not up to date. What is predisone? For
polyps? Does that make the heart beat fast/? I took something in a pak
and it said 5 (1 day) 4( secound day) 3 ( third) day ect. ( I think it
was a steroid)I think I had to stop because my heat rate was always at
125. Very scrary. What is Astelin Is that like/ rhinocrt/flonase? That
helped me? And what does Singular Do?? Are these all OTC or Dr
prescriptions? Im really intested in predisone. for polyps. Thank you.
My sisinues are way better now since you all have guided me in the right
direction. Thanks Steve, DR Grossan. Shirley (from before) (Shirley I
taliked to you before in acid ref, but some one screwed that up) if that
was you, Thank you, You are one of nicest persons to talk to. (and all
of you.) thank u all. Bye

Predisone is a steroid. Singular is for my asthema. I am on a lot of
meds and yes it is scary becuase knowing what side effects may occur.
However, I have a real poor quality of life if I'm not on a lot of
meds. When i take predisones it seems like my problems go away. I
dont know what is worst: Not being able to live a quality life now and
have a chance at major side effects down the road. Or deal with the
sinus problem and live through it for the rest of my life. I am so
much happier when I am clear of polyps or when they are very small.
