I came across this tidbit on a random web board talking about sinus
problems and afrin rebound:

====================

wow, i never imagined how many people get hooked on that stuff. i never
used it and will never try to. i always used a old russian remedy that
flushes out your whole nose when you're congested, but this is not for
the weak at heart. you have to urinate in a cup, then put some in a
palm of your hand and try to sniff some up each nostril. work better
then nasal spays

Yuck...
I've heard that before. Only then it was for earaches and you poured it in
your ear.
Who knows? I don't know ahyone who's tried it...doubt they would admit it if
they did!

I was having horrible trouble with my sinuses when  I was pregnant with my
first child.  The doctor told me to use Afrin or one of those other nasal
sprays.  So I used it one time and OMG, when it wore off I was completely
closed up and couldn't breath at all!   I said never again.  It was horrible
and lasted for hours.

Getting hooked on Afrin is no joke. Worse, we aren't sure whether its the
preservative that is the cause. Some have had afrin compounded and feel that
this doesn't give the rebound.
You don't get hooked on Afrin because you are weak or a bad person, its the
medication.
First to try is diluting it 1/2 and 12 with saline. For one week . Then next
week again 1/2 and 1/2. That can work.
In office practice it really takes maximum medication to get the cure.

WHen I *have* to use Afrin, I just use ONE small spray (instead of the
recomended 2-3) in  one nostril (occasionally both, but only when I
have both congested). I try and not use it more than 4 days
consecutively, and I usually use it only at night when I do.
