N-acetyl-cysteine may deserve a second look.

Years ago, I had tried N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) for its claimed mucolytic
properties,

http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/FRRB/VirtualSchool/Ercal-NAC.pdf

but it didn't seem to have any effect on me.  So I gave it up.  But back
then, before my sinus surgeries, prescription meds were becoming less
effective too.

It occurred to me that if prescription meds could be more effective
after surgery opened up my sinuses, maybe NAC could too, so I went back
and tried it again recently.  And at a dose of 600 mg twice a day, it
does seem to be having a definite mucolytic effect on the PND phlegm in
my throat and windpipe.

All these OTC mucolytics, including guaifenisin, seem to be so weak that
they're no substitutes for sinus surgery to relieve congestion.  But
after surgery, they may be just effective enough.

I've long been a huge fan of NAC. Seems to help my entire respiratory
system. I also use two doses a day - anywhere from 500mg to 750mg per
dose.

I remember learning of it from a book titled 'Life Extension' by Durk
Pearson & Sandy Shaw - maybe 15 or 20+ years ago.

They suggested it as a supplement smokers should use and since I'd
been addicted to tobacco decided I should start using it. I'm sorry to
say that I'm still addicted to tobacco. Although I've got the habit
much more under control, I still can't seem to give it up completely.
It's becoming increasingly difficult, sometimes impossible, to light
up a cigarrette in public these days and that helps. I only wish
tobacco had been illegal when I came of age, but back then people
harldly gave it a second thought. Hell, I had some relatives that used
to offer me cigarettes at family get togethers before I even started
smoking because once I turned 16 or so because I wanted to hang around
with 'the grown ups' and not the kids. I guess they felt it would make
me feel more like one of the grown ups - basically it was a well
intended gesture to make me feel welcomed and part of the group.

Besides making tobacco illegal, the government ought to put some
restrictions on Afrin (oxymetazoline) - WOW - I'm sure you all know of
the dangers of using that for any extended period. Well, I keep
running into more and more people that have to hit the Afrin every
couple of hours or they can't get even a trickle of airflow thru their
nostrils. That stuff is insidious.
