The posting is welcome and interesting but would you recommend actually taking
part in trials like this?

In many cases you would not even know whether you are getting the real drug or
the placebo,

This gives you odds of far under 50%.

I think you can do better by doing your own research on new treatments ....

Somebody's gotta do it.  If there was one near me I would do it in the
hopes of a breakthrough.

Not only as a benefit for others, which is a very decent thing do,
but there is the possibility of personal benefit, also.

Often in such trials, a patient is given full and extensive exams and
close monitoring . This is free. If one's insurance does not usually
cover all of the care involved, it is something that can then be
discussed with one's usual ENT after the trial, as any test results
(CTs, endoscopics, etc) should be made known to you.

Not all trials will give you all your personal data, some may pay you
for time or transportation - this will vary.

Do be careful with the informed consent papers. Make sure you read
them carefully before signing. If there is anything at all you do not
understand, get it explained to you. If there is the possibility of
risk that you are not comfortable taking, do not participate.
