I just went to my 3rd ENT for the year 2005. I have had sinus problems
for the past 15 years. (or I should say nasal passageway problems, as
my sinuses are fine) I have allergies and can control them pretty well
with Allegra.
*BUT* my real problem that I cannot get help for is vasomotor rhinitis.
Mine is triggered by odors. It is sooo bad that I cannot work in an
office any longer (perfume, smoke exposure) - I am lucky to have
created a job for myself out of my home as I cannot be exposed to ANY
odors or my right nasal passageway slams shut. Then I have terrible
headaches, fogginess, and eventually infection and it usually takes me
DAYS to get the swelling down if I didnt get an infection. It is a
miserable way to live, as complete avoidance to these irritants is
difficult.
I use nasal gels (ayr, simply saline, breathease xl)
I irrigate 2x a day (grossan & neilmed bottle)
I feel this condition was brought on by a second surface cauterization.
After it healed, I had a scab come out of my nose that was 2-3 inches
long and 1 inch wide & kind of deep. I am thinking I lost a TON of
cilia due to that cauterization and am now left with this
hypersensitivity to smell. No doctor will have any of that theory tho.
Seems logical to me tho.
But regardless of the cause, is there any help for this
hypersensitivity to smell?? I dont think I can take this much longer.

Among other possible causes, be sure to check your thyroid as a possible cause
of vasomotor rhinitis. It is a simpls blood test - try to get the numeric
value of your TSH level.

Hi Don, Thanks for the reply. I did have my thyroid check a couple
weeks ago as part of my physical. They didnt give me the numeric
value, but told me it came back normal...

Hi,
I had rhinitis from 1980 to 3 months ago. I actually still have it but
Claratin has dried it up a lot. I may have a little on some mornings
but I take a tablet of Claritin and it stops about 90% of the post
nasal drip and runny nose. I hope it works for you.
I also used to have trouble in Churches because of the perfume/hair
spray/moth balls/cleaning fluid/after shave lotion/and anything else
what was outgassing. I really had problems with extreme drowsiness. I
don't go to church that much anymore
