This worse than any strep throat episode I've ever experienced. The
last time I actually had strep throat was more than ten years ago, and
I had a fever with a temp of 104. My MD said the throat pain is due to
my sinuses, and that the only thing he can recommend is some OTC cold
remedy, lots of liquid, and a RX eye drops for the greenish discharge.
Maybe I should get a second opinion from an ENT but since I'm using an
HMO doc, I don't know if that's going to be easy.
I am also finding that I'm more sensitive to second hand smoke ever
since my allergies outbreak several days ago. I know I suffer from
seasonal allergies but nothing like this. Swallowing food or liquids is
even painful.

Didn't he try a three-week course of antibiotics?
If not, then you don't need to go to an ENT just yet. You need to find
a different primary-care physician who knows how to treat acute
sinusitis. Usually that means a 2 or 3 week course of a strong
antibiotic. It may take experimentation with a couple of different
antibiotics to find the one that kills the bugs in your sinuses. Only
if that course of action fails do you then need to see an ENT.

Some of the pain may be due to infected mucus having dripped
post-nasallly into your throat. Try nasal irrigation using one of the
many methods we've discussed on this NG before. The more gunk you can
flush out of your sinuses, the better.

The other thing that may happen is that that gunk will drip down into
your bronchial tubes and getting infected there also. I started
getting control over mine with nasal washes and antibiotics and staying
out of smoke filled rooms.
