hey all,

went to see an allergist/sinus specialist recently, and got the all
clear as regards allergies. he examined my nose and said it was very
swollen and cut and that was the source of my sinus problems. so he
prescribed a ten day course of betnesol nose drops.

however having finished the course I don't really feel a great deal
better. I intend to go back to the doctor, but in the meantime anyone
got any info on non-allergy related sinusitis? or good suggestions for
reducing swelling in the nose? I felt the betnesol was working a little
bit but since stopping it it's like things have gone back to normal.

thanks in advance,

Ronan.

Non allergic and allergic sinusitis respond to the same nasal sprays etc., so
one does not ned to distinguish betweent hem for this purpose.

Try prescription flonase ( flixonase in the u.k.) or nasonex steroid nasal
spray.  These are very similar to the drops you took, but can be taken
indefinitely, as they have very low systemic absorption......

I get stuffy noses or just a imflammation in the nose. I find the saline
rinses for a couple of days helps me.

I use Simply Saline 2x a day as other saline rinses burn my nasal
membranes. This also helps me as I have Hay Fever most of the year.

I am curious how your sinus got swollen and cut. Were you exposed to
chemicals or fumes or something in the environment?

Also if the two nasal steriods don't work for you that Don suggested you
should try one of the other ones. The only one that worked well for me was
Rhinocort Aqua (not sure what is called in the UK). Rhinocort is the only
one I believe that doesn't have a preservative. Some small percentage of
people are bothered by the preservative.

How long have you been suffering from your sinus problems?  Knowing how
they started in the first place might help shed some light on how to
deal with them.
