I have recently been diagnosed with GERD. I am in my early 40's and prior
to this had heartburn may be 2 or 3 times in my life. A couple of months
ago, I had a persistent sore throat, some hoarseness in the morning and
clear, thick, acidy tasting mucuos in my throat from time to time, and
some sinus congestion. First these symptoms were blamed on allergies and
then on post nasal drip. Later after a barium upper GI X ray I was
diagnosed having minor reflux in the base of my esophagus (GERD).
Throughout this I did not have the traditional heartburn symptoms that
most people with GERD have. I am taking Prilosec OTC for the GERD for a
about a month now. My doctor is preplexed why I have GERD as I eat a
healthy diet (cholestrol levels good), don't drink or smoke and am of thin
build.
My sinus history is that for the past 2 years I've had chronic sinusitis
that has been about 90% relieved after I had surgery this past April. I
irrigate twice a day with the Grossan irrigator to keep the sinuses
healthy. Since I started the Prilosec I have even less sinus congestion
(nearly none) but this could be due the fact that I am allergic to mold
and the mold levels in the air are significantly reduced in the last few
weeks in my area.
Anyone else have sinusitis and GERD together (especially GERD without
heartburn)? Anyone see an improvement in their sinusitis with GERD
treatment?
BTW - For a good web site that lists the pollens/mold levels in your area

You should see a gastroenterologist about a upper endoscopy and a test
for H. pylori. I had one and found out that the reason for my reflux is
that my lower esophageal sphincter is totally non-functional; a rare but
not unheard of congenital birth defect.
H. pylori bacteria can irritate the stomach and produce gastritis (or
even ulcers), which can trigger reflux.

Yes, I have both GERD and sinusitis. My ENT used to be skeptical, but
as more and more of his adult patients are turning out to have both GERD
and sinusitis, he is gradually beginning to suspect a connection. (He
has always believed that sinusitis in childreh is exacerbated by GERD.)
But this is very controversial, and most gastroenterologists don't
believe it. When I was at the Cleveland Clinic, I found the two
departments in the midst of arguing it: the otolaryngology department
believes it but the gastroenterology department says absolutely not,
making it difficult for the patients to get treated for it. :-)
I have taken Prevacid for my GERD but it's ineffective because my
sphincter is non-functional. So it may reduce stomach acid but I still
physically regurgitate my stomach contents and down into my airway.
When I cough up "phlegm," there are often food particles from
yesterday's meals mixed in it.

I had sinusitis before I was diagnosed with Gerds.
I use Prilosec too. I seem to get the reflux at times. My MD said to use
it if I feel I need it with a lot of reflux.
I use it for 3 days at night before going to bed. Then I will not have
reflux for months.
My sinusitis is the worst in the winter.
