Is it possible that allergies or chronic sinusitis can cause a person to
cough up yellowish brown mucus in the morning? What can be done about this?
It's so very aggravating and only happens in the mornings.
Thanks for any & all advice.

Dark-colored mucus is often a sign of sinus infection.  You need to see
a physician.

Of course, sinus infections can be precipitated by allergies.  So any
competent physician who suspects you have chronic sinusitis should also
have you take allergy tests.

Thanks for your reply.
I've been concerned about the color of the mucus I cough up in the mornings.
Odd thing is that during the rest of the day it doesn't happen. I'm
wondering if it's drainage? At times there ia also a lot of bubbly clear
drainage as well.
I see my doctor in a couple of weeks. She has told me that I have chronic
sinusitis from a bad infection I had last winter. I will have her refer me
to an allergist.

Could well be.
Actually, you might be secreting the same stuff during the day, but when
you're awake, you tend to swallow it so it doesn't go down into your airway.

Here are two simple tests you can do:

1.  When you cough up the gunk, how far down in your chest do you feel
it?  If you feel it way down in your chest, that is more indicative of a
lower respiratory tract problem.  If you feel it in your windpipe just
south of your larynx, that's more likely post nasal drainage indicative
of sinusitis.

2.  Have you tried nasal irrigation?  Try irrigating your nasal passages
with saline solution and see what you can flush out.  Remember, the more
gunk you can flush out of your nose, the less remains to drip down into
your airway.

If she already diagnosed you with chronic sinusitis, your first order of
business is to get referred to an ENT.  The ENT can always refer you to
an allergist.  But allergists can't always fix chronic sinusitis
themselves because of the infectious component.

It appears to me that when I am coughing up the 'gunk' that it is around the
windpipe, and, yes, I do irrigate in the evening. Perhaps I need to do it
more often?
I'm leery of that as last winter, when I had the bad infection, I developed
sores in my nose that bled when I blew my nose...scared the dickens out of
me.

One more thing.

Yellowish-brown mucus can also be caused by a lower respiratory tract
problem.  You need to see a physician who can make a proper diagnosis.

Yes, I thought about that, as well. We had been exposed to the burning of
construction materials bay a neighbour and had to leave our home for 8
months while we got an injunction to stop him from burning. We had
environmental specialists do 3 days of testing and they found arsenic,
copper, chromium ,etc. I believe that is what caused my illness over the
past winter. Before coming back into the house, everything was sanitized,
furnace & ductwork & AC replaced, mattresses & pillows thrown out, carpeting
removed, etc.
I'm sure you get the picture...a complete interior renewal, and bills so far
totalling $60,000 Canadian! Of course we are suing him to recoup...court
booked for 2007...a long  process.
Sorry to have written so much, but wanted to give you some background info
that I think has caused my sinus problems.

Toxic vapors like arsenic/copper/chromium can cause inflammations and
tissue damage but are not true allergies.  On the other hand, those
materials could have inflamed both your upper and lower respiratory
tracts.  This confirms that you should start with an ENT, not an allergist.
