Post-Op Infection

Hi,
I just had FESS surgery a month ago and a turbinectomy a couple of years
ago. I didn't "bounce back" from this surgery, and now understand I have
"another" infection. I have been pretty frightened by it, but found some
posts here that it is somewhat common to get an infection after surgery.

My ENT says he may actually have to go back in for a quick "surgery" on my
left side because newly formed scar tissue is blocking his view.

I'm just curious if this sounds familiar to any of you all.
Thanks,
Violet

I got a post-operative sinus infection after each of my two surgeries.
It started only a few days after the surgery.

The surgery leaves your sinus tissue in a raw state, and the cilia need
time to regenerate.  In the meantime, germs can stagnate inside the
sinuses because normally it's the cilia that sweep them away.

I would tell him that you are not feeling well enough yet for this new
surgery.

Or I would ask your primary doctor.

I know surgeons have cancelled surgery unti the patient is strong
enough.

Hi,

I had an infection flare up approx. 2 weeks after my FESS.  It started
a few days after i finished my post op antibiotics cycle.  My ENT and I
weren't sure if this was a new infection or if the other one simply
hadn't been eliminated.  So, it's not uncommon.   We simply started
another aggressive antibiotic/antiInflammatory/irrigation cycle that
finally cleared out the infection.

What I have learned from the group (and other research) is that a FESS
is not necessarily a cure for your current infection, but a functional
surgery to allow your sinuses to properly drain and recover from future
attacks.

What type of post-FESS irrigation program did your ENT put you on?  I
found that this was an integral part of my healing process.  As Steven
L said, your cilia are in a recovering state after the FESS, and
irrigation can offer the 'assistance' your sinuses need to help keep
new bacteria from stagnating.

Good Luck and keep positive!

Besides pulsatile irrigation, you need other aids to restoring cilia
function:
Tea -black, green, without caffeine is OK
Adequate liquids
Avoid chilling

Thank you. My inf flared up about 2 weeks post-op as well. That makes
sense that it could be the "old" infection. I'm on Augmentin XR 1000mg
2xday for 20 days, and I'm irrigating with the NeilMed Sinus Rinse
2xday. The NeilMed does seem to do very well.

I didn't expect to be away from work this long, and still feel pretty
badly. I've only been on the antibiotic 4 full days though.

This is a pretty lonely situation to be in as many people do not
understand what's going on. Thank you all for the words of
encouragement. I'm hanging in there and keeping the faith. :-)
