I am going to have some kind of turbinate surgery, as I am 100% blocked on
my right side.  What is involved?  Everybody I know who has had it said it
is painful when you go back to get the packing taken out.  Please don't
sugar-coat, as I want to know what I am facing.  I am so sick of the
constant sinus headaches..have one right now.  I get awful dizziness, to
where I can't even drive, and this lasts for months once it gets started.
Any opinions would be appreciated.  I also have scar tissue from having a
broken nose 30 years ago that the plastic surgeon says can be corrected,
after the turbinate surgery.

I didn't find it particaularly painful at all.   One quick tug and it's done .
A lot less painful than a lot of dental procedures.....

The doctor removed my packing in two office visits.  It was not painful
at all.

I had severe headaches that even prescription pain killers wouldn't
touch after surgery.  My ENT who was 2 hours away said to go ahead
and pull the packing out.  I had one on each side.  It was a gel
type packing.  I can't remember the name but Arnold Swarchenegger
was in a movie where he pulls a sensor out of his sinus.  That's
I felt like.  It was MASSIVELY painful and the large packing made
an awful sucking noise and I slowly pulled it out.  Then a load of
pus/blood and the packing fell into the sink.  Then I had to repeat
with the other side.

I am surprised to hear people discuss the pulling out of the packing
material as being anything other than excrutiating.  mine was the worst
experience of my life but it only lasted a second or two.  the surgeon was
awful.  the procedure was intense and "old-school"--so said a subsequent
surgeon.  and i believe that the packing removal tore a hole in my septum
-- either that or the surgery itself did -- also said by a subsequent
surgeon.

i had about 2 feet of gauze stuck up each nostril with string hanging out.
spending a day completely packed - (both nostrils) was hell.  i went to
the dr. office two days following surgery.  he gave me instructions to
pinch my nose tight after he removed the packing and spit the blood out in
to the sink but in no condition, let go of my nose.  he then grabbed hold
of the strings and without any product that might help, he yanked out the
gauze.  it felt like the entire inside of my nose and brain was coming out
with it.  any scabbing that had formed came out as well.  i pinched my nose
and in about 10 seconds started "vomiting" out the blood that was filling
my mouth and throat.

after this the pain was gone but it was a long time healing.

still though this all would have been worth it if only it would have done
something.  but i am back to where i was.

maybe this will work for you as far as stuffiness is concerned.  that was
never my complaint though and i really think this dr. was not a good one.
i am in the Philadelphia PA area - if anyone is ever schedeled for surgery
nearby - i will tell them who to avoid.

i wish that i had gotten a 2nd opinion.  i might still have gotten surgery
but i dont believe i would have had the intense one that i had.

if you havent gotten a second opinion, please do.

I had surgery that may have been old school as well, but can't complain.
I was in the hospital the days beofre and after the operation.

Me too, the 2 feet of gauze in my nose.

Oh, I felt tears come down the sides of my face, but don't remember any
pain.

Mine put a plate under my nose.  Afterwards, he asked me to wait in the
waiting room.  I scared everyone there.  On guy told me to go to hte ER.
Another woman washed my hands with a wipey.  I informed them that this
was AFTER the visit.  After 15 minutes, the bleeding stopped and I went
home.
