Yep, its true.

That happens to anyone who uses Afrin for more than a few days.

People here have posted a number of ways to beat it.  They're fairly
straightforward so you will be able to get off it.

Probably they will post them here again for you.

If not, please post again in a few days and I will try to find them and
repost......

I use Simply Saline rinse and gargle with warm salt water recommended
for mine as I have post nasal drip and allergies.
I do this at bedtime and in the morning.

This was recommended to me from my MD as I had frequent sinus infections
that would turn into upper respiratory infections.

Even though I take allergy pills I still get this.

OTOH, I use it only at bedtime, a single spray each side, with Astelin
so that I can sleep with the windows open and not wake up with a sinus
induced migraine.

Using it only once per day hasn't caused me to be congested on the
nights I don't use it, or the rest of the day.  Been doing this for a
month or so.

I don't believe the antihistimine Astelin has a rebound effect like Afrin,
as Astelin is meant to be used daily. The post you are referring to was
about (Afrin). Of course you can use Astelin daily with no problems, but
Afrin for a month, even once a day, I believe would not be advised, but I
could be wrong in the way if effects all people.

I'm not sure you understood my post.  I use Astelin twice per day, every
day.  I use Afrin *with* Astelin at bedtime each night, have done so for
about a month, most nights.  No problems breathing without it this way,
even when I skip nights.

Susan--I use Afrin with Astelin also--I tried going off Afrin (cold
turkey, and stayed off it 10 months)--but I find that I was congested
all the time just using Astelin and Flonase.

So, now I'm back to using Afrin.  Am I addicted--hell yes.  But it is
the ONLY thing that opens my nasal passages.  (I'm also taking allergy
shots and Singulair).--becky

I'm fortunate enough not to get congested when I don't use Afrin.  I
only use one spray each side, at night, and I skip nights when I'm not
feeling very allergic or the ac is on.

Singulair, unfortunately, made me feel edgy/agitated and spiked my blood
pressure.  The mood thing is common, I learned on askapatient.com, but
it's a great drug if you tolerate it.

If your allergy shots are effective, they offer wonderful relief.

I like to sleep with the windows open when it's dry and cool enough out
to do so.  Allergies cause me to get sinus triggered migraines if I
don't use the sprays.

I have been using Afrin every night for a year and a half, almost two.  I
use it at night to open things up to irrigate and basically to keep the
sinuses open.  I now add gentamicin as well which is pretty close to a
cure(as long as I don't get run down).

THe Afrin keeps me clear until the next dose, but if I go off it I get
stuffy in a day or two.  I think the key to avoiding major rebound is
keeping the dosing far enough apart and not increasing it.  I know it is
not the best thing, but it works for me.  How often do you use the spray?

My daughter waters it down, weaker strength. She and her hubby use it
this way.

One way to get off of afrin when hooked and you must use it daily is to have
a pharmacist help you make 1/2 dilutions with saline.
Week one equal pts saline to Afrin  solution one
Week two equal pts saline to solution one = solution two
Week three equal pts saline to solution two = equals solution three

And keep going. Hint : don't use saline with preservative such as
Benzalkonium. You can use my Breathe.ease XL for this without preservative.
