I live in Corpus CHristi, Tx. Have had sinusitis since 1999, just
keeps getting worse. First went to an allergist, then to an ENT,
neither were any help. The CAT scan showed a white area on one side of
my sinuses, which the ENT said is a cyst caused by the prolonged
irritation of the sinus membranes. I am not so sure now. In reading
about fungal sinusitis here, perhaps it was a fungus growth he was
seeing. Both of the MDs had me on the standard natural airborne
allergy immunotherapy (shots), but they did nothing. Food allergies
were ruled out. It is just as bad all year long, I believe because it
is really NOT any natural allergen in the air! The allergy specialist
precribed Duratuss GP, which was the strongest decongestant that could
be prescribed....it did NOTHING! I have tried taking as many as 3
Claritin -d a day, that also has no effect on relieveing the sinus
congestion. Both of them put me on a regimen of antiiibiotics, but
they did nothing. I am doing good to get 3 hours of sleep a day, the
constant congestion/need to keep clearing it is no bad. And as soon as
I get horizontal and turn the lights off, it gets ten times worse.
Neither of them ever even mentioned fungal sinusitis as a
possibility.....I think it is outside of their little "box". No
culture was ever taken of sinus secretions to see what is in there.
I went to my family physician and told him I was still having severe
siinusitis and need a referral to a dr. who could test me for a fungal
overgrowth. After a couple of months, I am still waiting. How can I
,on my own, find a MD in my town who has experience with this type of
sinusitis?
In the interim, I probably should try the hydrogen peroxide/baking
soda/ kosher salt iirrigation treatment. But to get the amphoteracin
B irrigation solution, I would have to see a specialist? or just my
family physician?
Thanks for your help! Jim

I would suggest ou go to Mayo and see if they think you have fungal sinusitis.
Since they are experts in that unproven theory, they will be able to diagosis
it if anyone can
If not, you probably do not, and they will have other useful ideas.
By the way, Claritin is an antihistamine and may not be advisable since it will
tend to dry in place whatever infection is present.

I have a simliar history. I went to mayo in March. Cost was airfare and
600.00 for ENT. They said that there was nothing wrong with me but sent
me home with the fungal wash to make me happy. I used it for a month
and then I got a really bad infection. I've yet to use the wash again.
Not sure if the wash was related at all.

Consider Dr. Robert Lebovics in NYC. He's an ENT with lots of experience.
