I use a CPAP with an ADAM CIRCUIT so have to breathe thru my nose, I
tried a full face mask and can not tolerate it, my problem is at night
when I go to bed my nose closes up solid very often, about 4 AM it eases
up so I can then go to bed, during the day I have no such problem
usually, I use Flonase and have tried taking it at various times of the
day to see if it helps but it seems to make no difference. I can't
figure out why I am bothered so much at night but during the day I have
vey little problem,it isn't a matter of not being ble to sleep because I
slept during the day, it's because I can not breathe thru my nose to use
the CPAP. AM I confusing everyone?

I get a lot of stuffy noses in the winter with the heat on. I use Ayr
nasal gel. It comes in a small tube, menthol or just plain to help me.
It keeps my nasal passages moist and when I awake in the morning I do
not have a stuffy nose or dry.
AYR has a mist also, but I find the gel works better for me.

Unfortunately, it's common for the turbinates to swell at least somewhat at
night....

I use a CPAP and have great relief after going to the VASAP (Allergy Sinus
Asthma Clinic) at Vanderbilt Hospitals in Nashville, TN.
They advised Mattress and pillow encasements to reduce dust mite problems.
They prescribed Nasonex and Astelin morning and bedtime along with Zyrtec at
bedtime. They also advised me that one spray of Afrin in each nostril at
bedtime would not cause rebound problems.
So far the results have been very good. I can breathe at night.

I don't use a CPAP, and I do use a large HEPA air cleaner in my BR,
along with encasings, Astelin, Zyrtec and, recently, Rhinocourt along
with rapid allergic desensitization by injections.
I can breathe well all night, without any decongestant pill or spray.
I also have wood floors in my house, with no area rug in my bedroom (yet).

Thanx Pete, I tried Afrin way back a while and always had rebound, maybe
a sniff once in a while as you say, will help, i remember it really did
the job except for the rebound. It isn't a nightly occurence but once in
a whie.

I have found that trial and error is how to find the best way to keep your
turbinates from swelling (which is the mechanism of "stuffy nose").
Try windows open, for example, and a fan blowing the air (blow it out another
window).
For me, that keeps the turbiantes from swelling.
What keeps your nosr the widest open during the day will help most at night
too, so it is actually easy to try different environmental cahnges.
As a matter of fact, if you avoid irritating your turbinates, you also avoid
irritating your sinuses. That is what I have found....

I forgot to add...I was given a NeilMed Sinus Rinse kit www.neilmed.com to
rinse Sinus and nasal passages morning and bedtime prior to using sprays. To
save money VASAP suggested I can substitute 1/2 teaspoon salt in tap water
for the rinse.

I've been using a CPAP with a heated moisturizer for six months with almost
identical problems with my turbinates swelling when I lay down at night.
Swelling usually resolves by 4 AM or so. I'm also using Flonase. Make sure
your mattress is encased in plastic cover to protect from dust mites.
Allergy shots are helping me. Afrin would really help but I'd be hooked very
quickly. I irrigate with the Hydropulse about 2 hrs before bedtime. I also
take a Sudafed about an hour before bedtime. I hate Sudafed but I simply
can't use my CPAP unless at least one nostril is totally clear and the
Sudafed usually helps. A dab of Vick's below my nose will help if the
congestion isn't too bad. AW
